Tenerife North Airport (TFN) (then called Los Rodeos - TCI) is situated in the northern part of Tenerife, and is now used mainly for flights within the Canary Islands and flights from the Spanish mainland.
The only member of the KLM passenger manifest to avoid the disaster was Robina van Lanschot, a travel guide who lived on Tenerife and, wanting to see her boyfriend that night, elected not to reboard the 747 when it was due to depart.
In 1978 a second airport was inaugurated on the South of the Island: the new Tenerife South Airport (TFS).

Due to the frequent and dangerous fogs that cover the area around Los Rodeos airport in the North of the island, a second airport was built in the South of the Island: the new Reina Sofía Airport.

 Disaster
A disaster is an unexpected natural or unintentional man-made catastrophe of substantial extent causing significant property damage or destruction, loss of lives or sometimes permanent changes to natural environment.
Disasters may also be used to refer to unforseen events which devastate a company or industry such as a public relations disaster or a major flop[?].
An attack with much collateral damage may be considered a disaster, such as the attack on KdF Ship Wilhelm Gustloff, 1945, the worst or perhaps second worst maritime incident in history, in terms of loss of life in a single vessel (see also note at the end of the article RMS Titanic).

The First Officer and the Flight Engineer left the aircraft and measured the clearance left by the KLM aircraft, reaching the conclusion that it was insufficient to allow PA1736 to pass by, obliging them to wait until the former had started to taxi.
The accident took place on the runway of Tenerife Airport (Los Rodeos) at latitude 28° 28' 30" N and longitude 16° 19' 50" W. The field elevation is 2,073 feet (632 m).

NOVA | The Deadliest Plane Crash | The Final Eight Minutes | PBS
The investigation into the myriad causes of the disaster at Tenerife's airport on March 27, 1977 was one of the largest in aviation history, involving more than 70 officials from Spain, the Netherlands, and the United States.
Because the actions of both the flight crews of the two aircraft involved and Los Rodeos Airport's air traffic controllers so directly contributed to the disaster, the log of conversations between the two planes and the tower in the minutes leading up to the collision was investigators' key tool for ultimately piecing together the events.
By the time either flight crew saw the other plane in the fog, it was too late to avert the disaster, which arose out of a series of miscommunications among both flight crews and the control tower.
