TO DO! Rationale for the Award - TENGBOCHE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT, Nepal
For almost 40 years the Tengboche monastery has had the "bad luck" to be situated at the popular main route to the Everest base camp and to be used as a beautiful resting and camping site for expeditions and trekking groups or as Buddhist backdrop to the exotic Himalayan trip.
For what counted for the Tengboche Rinpoche were not only the aspects of a financial, infra-structural and structural guarantee for the monastery's future but in the long term also a number of closely interwoven objectives which would have an impact on the region.
In the narrow sense the population of Tengboche is equal to the monks living in the monastery.

 Tengboche Monastery | Welcome
In my own monastery, Tengboche, in the Khumbu region of Nepal, we are working to promote environmental conservation, reduce pollution and waste, and raise awareness of the relationship between spirituality and nature in the face of increased tourism, rapid development and pressure on the environment.
The Tengboche Sacred Land Eco-Center, which has just been opened by Trulshik Rinpoche, provides us the momentum and the means for consolidating, sustaining and expanding our past efforts.
The world we live in today is not the same as yesterday's: today we have a bigger population, new and increased needs and therefore, more effort is necessary to promote the well being of the environment which ultimately ensures our own.

A case in point is the monastery TENGBOCHE, the spiritual center and heart of the Sherpa culture, which no longer passively concedes that it be used as a backdrop for the Buddhist scene – for the exotic Himalaya trip to Mount Everest.
With the Tengboche Development Plan of 1995 it was agreed to actively promote the monastery and the habitat of the Sherpa ethnic group which had immigrated from Tibet centuries age, and to attract some 30,000 visitors each year.
The income earned through the Tengboche Eco Center is partly used to secure the future of the monastery (training of monks who will later teach in the villages, food, social fund), and for environmental projects in the region (reforestation) or for measures strengthening the Sherpa culture.
