Tennessee is a Southern state of the United States.
Tennessee was the only state that seceded from the Union that did not have a military governor during Reconstruction, mostly due to the influence of President Andrew Johnson, a native of the state, who was Lincoln's vice president and succeeded him as president, due to the assassination.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, as of 2005, Tennessee has an estimated population of 5,962,959, which is an increase of 69,661, or 1.2%, from the prior year and an increase of 273,697, or 4.8%, since the year 2000.

Law Banning Cyber Charter Schools May Be Harming Education in Rural Tennessee - by Andrew T. LeFevre - The Heartland ...
A report released by the Tennessee Center for Policy Research on October 31 suggests the state's three-year-old charter school law, which expressly prohibits the authorization of cyber charters, may be preventing thousands of rural students from improving their education.
Changing the Tennessee Public Charter Schools Act of 2002 to allow the creation of cyber charter schools is one way to help ensure children in rural areas of the state can receive the highest quality education possible, Mitchell writes.
While it would take a relatively simple language change to allow cyber charter schools in Tennessee, Mitchell cautions in his report that legislators must craft language that would prevent school systems from abusing the financial benefits of cyber charters, while respecting and protecting parents' rights to homeschool their children.

Programs that quietly yet steadily provide critical services to the public through the University of Tennessee Agricultural Experiment Station, and through similar facilities in other states, are at risk because the president's proposed federal budget eliminates traditional formula funding provided to the nation's land grant institutions.
Mitchell cited recent reviews by Yale University and Iowa State University of 85 economic studies of publicly funded agricultural and forestry research and education programs.
The proposed budget redistributes the traditional formula funds through a system of targeted competitive grants, but UT administrators and their counterparts across the nation are concerned that vital programs will be overlooked in the competitive process.
