		Tennessee is known as the "Volunteer State", a nickname it earned during the War of 1812, in which volunteer soldiers from Tennessee played a prominent role, especially during the Battle of New Orleans.
		In Tennessee, the Gulf Coastal Plain is divided into three sections that extend from the Tennessee River in the east to the Mississippi River in the west.

		The institution now known as Tennessee Wesleyan College was established in 1857, when the Holston Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church South acquired the property of the Athens Female College, chartered in 1854 by the Order of Odd Fellows.
		The school continued to operate as a women's college until 1865, when it passed from the control of the Methodist Episcopal Church South to that of the Methodist Episcopal Church, a body composed of Union sympathizers.
		In 1889 the Athens college merged with Chattanooga University, with the two campuses governed by a single board of trustees and chancellor under the auspices of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

		In 1867, the name again changed, this time to East Tennessee Wesleyan University; in 1886 it became Grant Memorial University; in 1889, U.S. Grant Memorial University, with divisions in Athens and Chattanooga; and in 1906, the Athens School of the University of Chattanooga.

		Tennessee was admitted to the Union in 1796 as the 16th state, and was created by taking the north and south borders of North Carolina and extending them with only one small deviation to the Mississippi River, Tennessee's western boundary.
		After the American Civil War, Tennessee adopted a new constitution that abolished slavery (February 22, 1865), ratified the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution on July 18, 1866, and was the first state readmitted to the Union (July 24 of the same year).

		Recognizing the need for baccalaureate education concomitant with patient needs and national trends, a proposal to establish a baccalaureate nursing program jointly between Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center and Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens was approved in 1998.
		Upon approval from the Tennessee Board of Nursing, the baccalaureate program admitted its first class in 2000 with graduation in May 2002.
