tenor. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
In medieval polyphony, tenor was the name given to the voice that had the cantus firmus, a preexisting melody, often a fragment of plainsong, to which other voices in counterpoint were added.
The cantus was arranged in notes of long duration, hence the term tenor, from the Latin tenere, to hold.
In certain families of instruments the member whose register corresponds to that of the tenor voice is called tenor, e.g., tenor horn and tenor trombone.

Barnes & Noble.com - Music: Britten: Serenade for Tenor, Horn & Strings; Les Illuminations; Nocturne, Ian ...
Benjamin Britten's music for the tenor voice still seems to be owned, decades posthumously, by Peter Pears, whose recording of the composer's three great song cycles holds an especially treasured place in the discography.
Tenor Ian Bostridge brings together three of Britten's most important song cycles: "Serenade for tenor, horn and strings," "Les Illuminations," and "Nocturne." His performances are notable for their dramatic range, particularly the power and passion and vocal abandon he brings to these works.
Likewise the Nocturne 'for tenor, seven obbligato instruments an strings' is a mature work of Britten's and has echoes of phrases from what by the time of its composition were closely identified with the 'Britten sound'.

Variations on the Baritone Horn and Euphonium-p.2
The baritone horn's tubing is about half-and-half so it doesn't sound like a trombone nor does it sound like a tuba -- rather, somewhere inbetween.
This special type of horn was invented in the 1880's and was made through the 1900's although its popularity waned after WWII.
From what we know based on the shapes of the tubing, the trombone will have the brightest, most brilliant or brassy sound; the baritone horn will sound a bit softer and mellower; and the euphonium will have the softest, most round and mellow sound of them all.

Variations on the Baritone Horn and Euphonium
Since basically everything else about the trombone and baritone horn are the same as far as the mouthpiece, harmonics and lipping up to higher notes in the overtone series, it was an easy transition and fun to play for a change.
Early trumpets and horns were already using extra lengths of tubing--called crooks--to change their key; but the player had to stop playing to pull out one crook and exchange it for another of different length before playing again.
Eventually, the arrangement of "2-1-3" (semitones) became the standard valve arrangment due to the ease of placement of the smallest loop in the middle.
