Saxophone - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The saxophone or sax is a conical instrument of the woodwind family, usually made of brass and played with a single-reed mouthpiece like the clarinet.
Sax's amazing ability to offend rival instrument manufacturers, and unfortunate prejudice towards the man and his instruments led to it not being used in orchestral groups, and for a long time it was relegated to military bands--this despite his great friendship with the influential Parisian composer Hector Berlioz.
The tenor in C, generally known as the C melody saxophone, was very popular among amateurs in the 1920s and early 1930s, because players did not need to transpose.

Selmer tenors have their own special sound – a certain depth and illusive X factor quality to the tone, and I feel that a similar thing is going on with the Rampone.
Also, for those student sax players who want to upgrade from a basic model to a professional standard instrument, without breaking the bank, this is the ideal tenor sax.
This is what the tenor sax is all about: really full and meaty at the bottom with a soaring altissimo that seemed effortless to fly around, and a middle register that really sang.

The tenor sax, on the other hand, rose from mere comic novelty status in the 1920's to a principal spot in the front lines of most modern Jazz combos.
From the Classic Jazz period to the Swing Era one player had a virual monopoly on the tenor sax, that man being Coleman Hawkins, a.k.a., the Hawk or the Bean.
It was also in 1933 that Hawkins encountered the first real threat to his monopoly of the tenor sax.

I experimented with the Selmer tenor sax mouthpiece in D and E facings (.078" and.083") and the Runyon #4 through #7 facings (.078 through.090").
The tone quality of a mouthpiece is influenced more by the shape of the baffle and chamber than by the material from which it is made--though the material does contribute to the tone since the mouthpiece also vibrates.

This is a major case for these Saxes being a NEW SAX; I did not care for the Silver Plated and Gold Plated 875’s when I purchased my Black Alto and was convinced I was going to love the Black Custom Z.
The new Selmer reference Saxes are OK. The LA Sax straight Tenor and straight Alto had huge cool factor going on and I would have got one of each to work with just because so many people thought they looked bizarre.

When ever and wherever Dexter Gordon appeared it was an event, a celebration of life by the music that coursed through his tenor saxophone which sometimes looked (but never sounded) like a toy in the hands of the handsome, 6'5" man whose frame were symbolic of his stature as an artist.
Through tenor titans such as Coltrane and rollins, Gordon exerted an indirect influence on the music of the next generation.
At 15 he switched to alto sax and two years later, in 1940, he made the move to tenor, left school and began gigging around with a local band called the Harlem Collegians.

What is the difference between a tenor sax and an alto sax? : Brass instruments
Actually, while both saxes use essentially the same fingerings, embouchure, etc., the main difference is that the alto sax plays in a higher register than the tenor sax.
The tenor sax generally has a mellower, deeper sound, though good players can get a huge range of sounds out of both instruments.
In addition to being deeper sounding and larger in size, the tenor sax has a neck piece that is shaped differently than that of an alto sax - which is important since it's the easiest way to figure out what kind of sax you're looking at.

I was kind of looking into general ideas on what's best for enhancing and roll off in a tenor sax track independently on how is the track integrated in the mix.
I've heard totally different EQ modes for different tenors but there is one specific I like which is some sort of warm and rough sound accenting the transient sounds.
I actually meant that the sax in the mix might sound better (I typically do not deal too much with soloing tracks only to understand the impact of the effects on the track but not for mixing).

I've used the same Hamilton sax stand for the past 15 years and it's still in perfect condition.
It is very important to know that for tenor, the stand will not hold the instrument very securely and may cause it to fall off if the instrument is placed on it at even the slightest angle (you have to kind of wiggle it in to place).
Being that this is a metal stand, the lip of the bell of the saxophone tends to reach past the rubber protectors on the top and cause a tiny scratch on the bell.
