Tension wrench - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A tension wrench is a tool used in picking locks.
The tension wrench is then used to turn the inner cylinder and open the lock.
Some tension wrenches (called "Feather Touch" wrenches, among other names) are coiled into a spring at the bend in the "L", which helps the user apply constant torque.

By picking the lock, you simply replace the function of a key with a pick that raises the pins to their "break- ing point," and using a tension wrench one rotates the cylinder to operate the cam at the rear of the lock's cylinder to unlock the mechanism.
(See Fig-01.GIF) The tension wrench is used to apply tension to the cylinder of the lock to cause a slight binding action on the pins as well as to turn the cylinder after the pins have been aligned by the pick; this opens the lock.
Insert the tension wrench at the bottom of the keyway and hold it in a clockwise turn with your ring and little finger, causing a slight binding pressure on the cylinder.

Lock picking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A tension wrench (or torque wrench) is used to apply a torque to the cylinder, while a lock pick (or picklock) is used to push individual pins up until they are flush with the shear line.
Once all of the pins are flush with the shear line, the tension wrench can be turned fully to open the lock.
While applying torque with the tension wrench, a lock pick with a wide tip is placed at the back of the lock and quickly slid outwards with upward pressure so all the pins are pushed up.

Applied Bolting: Direct Tension Indicators: Calibrated Wrench
The Research Council stipulates that each day, for each different diameter, length, and grade of bolts, a representative sample of three bolts must be selected to calibrate a wrench.* The bolts are tensioned in a Skidmore-Wilhelm bolt tension calibrator on the site to measure (i.e.
"calibrate") how much torque it takes to get the bolts up to the correct tension.** The wrench is then set to cut out at that torque (the wrench becomes "calibrated"), and then all similar bolts that day are installed to that torque after the joint is snugged first.
Actual results of tension in bolts produced by this method are acknowledged to be highly variable, even when this method is followed religiously, which is rarely the case.

Re: How does a TORQUE Wrench work ?
By adjusting a dial on the bottom of the wrench the tension in the spring can be increased by mechanically compressing the spring.
When the torque applied exceeds the amount of pressure exerted by the ball to resist motion (simplified explanation), the ball is pushed down and the wrench slips until the cam strikes the inner wall of the wrench itself and stops the slipping motion.
One thing with these types of wrenches that is very important is that after use it should be stored with all the tension removed from the spring (torque setting on dial set to "0").
