Tentmaking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Tentmaking is a method of international Christian evangelism in which missionaries support themselves through external work, instead of receiving financial support from a church.
For example, Abraham raised cattle, Joseph was a government official, Joshua was a war general, Esther was a great ruler of her people, and Luke was a doctor.
More recently, William Carey (1761-1831), considered to be the father of modern Christian missions, was a tentmaker in India, working as a factory owner and university professor while fulfilling his missions duties.

Tentmaking provides the opportunity to be faithful to whatever theological/praxological distinctives one is convinced are essential without the need to be "seeker-sensitive" just to get revenues up so a church can afford to pay a decent salary.
For tentmaking to be successful, one has to have elders, deacons, and lay leaders who are willing to do a bit of work themselves rather than pile everything on the pastor.

 FBF - Tentmaking
A middle-aged couple walked up to a display from Worldwide Tentmakers, Inc. at a missions conference and the lady exclaimed, "Oh, I am so glad someone still makes tents for those outdoor meetings!" Making tents is not exactly what Worldwide Tentmakers is all about; but, unfortunately, her misconception about "tent-making" is a common one.
Tentmaking is the Biblical missions strategy of using a secular occupation as a means to be a witness for Christ in a foreign country.
Lastly, tentmakers can get to the foreign field quickly because they do not have to spend time on deputation raising support; nor do they take financial resources away from Christian ministries here, freeing up funds to be used for other purposes.

 Ministry in Daily Life
Tentmakers by and large have been action people.  People from business and commerce and the rough and tumble world of earning their own living.  Very few have been trained thinkers and even fewer have got around to writing serious stuff.
Sometimes lets face it, tentmakers are so fiercely independent that they can’t even get on with each other. Some of the stories of the early days of tentmaking don’t make good reading, stories of splits and divisions, egos in full flight and that is hardly the way to get a movement established.
Tentmakers are simply marketplace Christians with an air ticket.  I fail to see how a person can be a truly effective tentmaker unless they are first an effective marketplace Christian.  entmakers cut their teeth in the marketplace at home, not abroad. In their own culture, not somebody else’s.
