Tenure track   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
Tenure commonly refers to academic tenuresystems, in which professors (at the university level)—and in some jurisdictions schoolteachers (at primary or secondary school levels)—are granted the right not to be firedwithout cause after an initial probationary period.
Tenure systems are usually justified by the claim that they provide academic freedom, by preventing instructors from being fired for openlydisagreeing with authorities or popular opinion.
A candidate denied tenure is sometimes considered to have been fired, but this is not entirely accurate: employment is often guaranteed for a year after tenureis denied, so that the non-tenured professor can conduct an extended search for new employment.

It is accessible to the candidate and to all of the tenure faculty in the department, while other portions of the candidate's personnel file are accessible only to the candidate and to those who have reason to deal with particular information contained in it.
The fact that a member of the tenured faculty has formed a view of the candidate's teaching, research, or scholarship during the course of the candidate's career is not a basis for disqualification.
The department head (or the designated tenured faculty member or committee) prepares a draft report which states the faculty's recommendation, reports all votes taken, summarizes the candidate's file, and summarizes the reason for the action expressed at the meeting of the tenure faculty (including any minority views expressed at the meeting which had substantial support).

Tenure -- What is It? (Dennis G. Jerz -- Seton Hill University)
Tenure is a professor's permanent job contract, granted after a probationary period of six or seven years.
At most smaller colleges, a faculty member's eligibility for tenure is determined by first by teaching ability, second by publication record (academic or creative, depending on what the candidate was hired to teach), and third by a combination of departmental service (participation in various faculty committees) and student advising.

Adjustments in the tenure clock may not be made after-the-fact, and cannot be made to extend the candidate's time on tenure track for more than 10 years.

The Tenure Track - Continuum Magazine - Spring 2003 - University of Utah
Though a cornerstone of higher education, tenure is a concept that continually generates controversy, often based on anecdotal evidence, misapplied comparisons, and genuine frustration about its unwieldy process and political overtones.
Tenured and tenure-eligible faculty make up about 65 percent of all full-time faculty and about 45 percent of all faculty who are teaching in a given term.
In addition, tenured faculty in a department—who may be involved in traditional forms of research—must be able to recognize new fields of study, new teaching technologies, and new forms of interdisciplinary work, to name just a few, while maintaining the department’s standards of excellence for scholarship.

Tenure is a topic that has produced much heated discussion in recent years.
Some argue that tenure is an outmoded concept, and, if institutions are going to remain competitive, they need to be able to have more flexibility to hire and fire faculty as student needs change.
Others argue that tenure is vital to the protection of academic freedom and that without tenure we will return to the days when faculty were dismissed for teaching unpopular opinions.
