As immigrants rally across the United States to demand legal status and citizenship, their movement evokes pride and alarm in poor Mexican communities such as Teocelo, where livelihoods and ambitions revolve around the promise of jobs north of the border.
Teocelo does not look like a place that could sustain many inhabitants without the earnings migrants send home to its farming hamlets, which dot the Sierra Madre Oriental foothills south of Jalapa in Veracruz state.
The outflow reduced Teocelo´s population from 17,500 in 1994 to about 15,000 in the 2000 census.

We discovered Radio Teocelo early on not by being told about it or happening by the station one day (though that happened soon enough), but finding the very first week we were here that if we tuned our AM dial to 1490 we got the best and widest variety of music anywhere on the dial.

We originally wanted to visit that place last weekend, but back then the weather was quite bad (lot of rain).
But today was a beautiful day, so we took the bus in the direction of Teocelo and asked the driver to signal us when we where close to El Puente Olvidado, the Forgotten Bridge, which we accidentally found when my mother was visiting us a few months ago.
When we got off the bus we had to walk in the direction of Teocelo for a short while.

Going into Teocelo one day, we had noticed a little sign pointing to the falls.
Now Teocelo is on the other side of the river gorge the falls tumble into.
Anyway, the falls are spectacular from that side, too, and touristy or not, it's really fun to make the trip and cross the bridge over the falls and look down the canyon and if you are feeling up to it, go down the steps to the bottom of the falls.

As you probably know the Blessed Virgin Mary is a particularly important patroness in Mexico, especially under the title of “Our Lady of Guadalupe,” where her image literally is found everywhere, from private homes and parish churches, to taxi cabs and public buses.
It all brought to mind the 1970’s at Christ in the Desert when things were really a bit too primitive even for me, who had gone to New Mexico wanting a simple contemplative lifestyle.
Now the dream of an adequate monastery has been realized at Teocelo and the dozen or so monks are more than ready to occupy their new monastery.

Later in the week I traveled to Teocelo, to our Monastery of Saint Mary and All the Saints.
It is a trip of about eleven or twelve hours by car between these two monasteries, depending on the number of stops and the amount of traffic.
In the monastery near Teocelo, my task is the same as it was in La Soledad: to listen to the brothers, to make decisions and to make suggestions I also meet with some of the friends of the monastery.
