Teoma - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Teoma, pronounced tay-o-ma, was an Internet search engine founded in 2000 by Professor Apostolos Gerasoulis and his colleagues at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Many parts of Teoma's relevancy algorithm were based on the methodology IBM developed for its Clever project.
Teoma was acquired by Ask Jeeves on September 11, 2001, and has powered ask.com and other international Ask Jeeves sites (such as ask.co.uk, ask.jp) and Ask Jeeves Spain [1] since then.

Teoma, among the three main search engines, is the best real 'alternative' to google.
Because Teoma has advanced search capabilities, that allow to refine a query using specific criteria such as exact phrase, page location, geographic region, domain and site, date, search within results and word filter.
Teoma should by all means put a nice "check mark" next to the paid crap results they are smuggling inside the SERPs.

Teoma's rapid growth has been fueled in part by the dramatic improvements the technology has made in the quality of search results on the Ask Jeeves portal.
One of the most innovative features of the Teoma search interface is a listing of related terms that allow the searcher to refine their search.
Teoma is in a rapid growth phase right now, so you can expect them to be a couple months behind on crawling the web, at least for a while.

Teoma is a technology company that measures the authority as well as the popularity of web sites.
Teoma uses what they have branded as Subject-Specific Popularity that ranks a site based on the number of same-subject pages in other ranked sites that link to it, not just general popularity (page count), to determine a site's level of authority.

Teoma calls this "Subject-Specific Popularity." The idea is this: If you want to know the best Web sites for auto enthusiasts, you will do better by polling the sites of other auto enthusiasts than you will do by polling the Internet at large.
Teoma, which is owned by Ask Jeeves Inc., touts two other features: "Refine" and "Resources," both of which appear onscreen to the right of the search results.

What Teoma does is extend this a little by finding the sites that concern themselves with the search string.
It could probably be more easily explained by saying that Google asks about a certain expert in a field and then goes and takes a poll from people in the street over which one they think is best.
Teoma would ask all the experts in the field which one of themselves they think is best.

In acquiring Teoma, which addresses similar "popularity ranking" methodologies as Google, Jeeves would appear to be conceding that its earlier acquisition of Direct Hit, a technology that supposedly tracked user behavior to measure a site's popularity, was a bust.
The flipside of the economic downturn that has led to Jeeves' currently-depressed stock price is that the startup companies it might like to acquire don't command much of a premium, and will face a tough road gaining needed funding in this economic environment, making them much cheaper to acquire.
