Bean - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bean is a common name for large plant seeds of several genera of Fabaceae (formerly Leguminosae) used for food or feed.
Bean originally meant the seed of the broad bean, but was later broadened to include members of the genus Phaseolus such as the common bean or haricot and the runner bean and the related genus Vigna.
Bean can be used as a near synonym of pulse, an edible legume, though the term "pulses" is usually reserved for leguminous crops harvested for their dry grain.

GENE MAPPING IN TEPARY BEAN   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
Tepary bean also has considerable potential as a source of desirable traits lacking in common bean, most importantly heat and drought tolerance, and resistance to certain viruses and bacteria (Pratt and Nabhan, 1988, R. Provvidenti, pers.
Thus, a genetic map of tepary bean may be relatively uncomplicated to construct, and will be of value not only as a generalized Phaseolus map, but also for tagging important tepary bean genes which researchers are attempting to transfer from tepary to common bean.
The morphological markers are stem anthocyanin (Anth) and pod dehiscence (Dpo), and the molecular marker is the ribosomal DNA region (rDNA).

 Tepary Beans
Tepary beans, once a staple in the Sonoran Desert and cultivated throughout Mesoamerica, are one of North America's most illustrious native crops.
They are capable of producing a harvest of beans with a single rain in the harshest conditions; when irrigated, they produce higher yields only up to a certain point, after which excess moisture becomes a detriment and leads to overproduction of foliage and low bean production.
Traditionally, in the Sonoran Desert, two crops of tepary beans were grown a year, one in the spring using winter moisture stored in the ground and one in the late summer, planted at the time of the monsoons.

ADAPTATION OF THE TEPARY BEAN Phaseolus acutifolius TO NORTHERN ENVIRONMENT   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-30)
The tepary bean, native to the American southwest and to Mexico, has commonly been thought of as adapted to arid southern environments.
The development of irrigation, along with preference for the better quality of P. vulgaris beans, presumably accounted for failure of the tepary to establish itself in U.S. agriculture, either as an edible bean or as a forage.
Our assessment, based on numerous general observations and on as yet preliminary data, is that some of the domesticated teparies may have good potential on northern droughty soils, Their drought tolerance, high harvest index and relatively high nitrogen fixing capability indicate the potential.
