Teraina is small, 3.5 miles long by 2 miles wide, and it has a human population of 900.
However, we read that Teraina, also called Washington Island, has a 2 km freshwater lake and a pristine forest of Pisonia, a native tree that is in decline throughout the central Pacific.

Kiritimati (1°52'N, 157°20'W) and Teraina (3°51'N, 159°22'W) Islands are sparsely populated coral atolls separated by ~300 km within the southeast-northwest trending Northern Line Islands of the Republic of Kiribati (Figure 1).
Teraina's freshwater lake is rare in atoll islands, and is maintained by high average annual rainfall of 2903 mm [11] (Figure 3).
Teraina does not possess the numerous lakes of Kiritimati, but a large peat bog in the western center of the island (Western Peat Bog), a large central fresh-water lake (Washington Lake), and a canal connecting the lake with the sea were surveyed (additional file 3).

Teraina (formerly Washington Island) is a low-lying coral island with an area of 14.2 km² located in the northern Line Islands 150 km northwest from the atoll of Tabuaeran.
The island is surrounded by a fringing reef that is generally narrow, but extends for up to 500 m off the eastern shore — features which make access to the island difficult.
Teraina is an important seabird breeding site, with about 10 breeding species, the most abundant being the Red-footed Booby (Sula sula) and the White Tern (Gygis alba).

This survey will offer a unique view into the groups of organisms that are lost, the species interactions that are altered, and the trophic dynamics that are changed as humans disturb a reef.
This study will be the first to control for biogeographic differences among sites, to include broad taxonomic sampling, and to include pristine/nearly pristine reef sites into analyses of human impacts on coral reefs.
