village voice > film > The Winslow Boy: prosaic justice by Jessica Winter
The Winslow Boy is the unexpectedly suitable marriage of Terence Rattigan's 1946 play and David Mamet's more nettlesome tendencies as a dramatist and filmmaker.
Rattigan fictionalized the 1910 trial of an English military cadet wrongfully dismissed for stealing a postal order; this tiny incident becomes an issue of national import as young Ronnie Winslow's father, Arthur (Nigel Hawthorne), and suffragette sister, Catherine (Rebecca Pidgeon), petition the crown to clear the boy's name.
Rattigan's play suggested that the British press and judicial system will right any wrong if a citizen presents his suit with conviction, though he took care to portray the damage sustained by each Winslow as the matter dragged on: Arthur's health deteriorates, Catherine's marriage prospects collapse, and so on.

Terence Young is the author of The Island in Winter (Vehicule, 1999), which was nominated for the Governor General's Award for Poetry.
In a novel that reads like a cross between a male Anne Tyler and a West Coast Jonathan Franzen, Terence Young tunnels deep into the dark heart of the Goodlake family.
Young shows us how Fergus' resulting crisis is by turns humorous, tragic and epic, involving not only his own story but also the story of generations in a family, a respected business, a town and the people who populate it.

 Jean de la Fontaine
Madame de Sévigné, one of the soundest literary critics of the time, and by no means given to praise mere novelties, had spoken of his second collection of Fables published in the winter of 1678 as divine; and it is pretty certain that this was the general opinion.
The reading of François de Malherbe, it is said, first awoke poetical fancies in him, but for some time he attempted nothing but trifles in the fashion of the time -- epigrams, ballades, rondeaux, etc. His first serious work was a translation or adaptation of the Eunuchus of Terence (1654).
La Fontaine's irregularities are strictly regulated, his cadences carefully arranged, and the whole effect may be said to be (though, of course, in a light and tripping measure instead of a stately one) similar to that of the stanzas of the English pindaric ode in the hands of Dryden or Collins.

Billy Budd's only extraordinary aspect is the heart-stopping sight of 23-year-old Terence Stamp, in his film debut, as the doomed Handsome Sailor—the sobriquet is quite an understatement, in a film in need of more of it.
The credo of Denis's film could be provided by Captain Vere: "With mankind, forms, measured forms, are everything." The soldiers' regimented exercise rituals give their good work a steadying rhythm if not a meaning—they're forever preparing for a battle that's not coming.
John Barrymore played Ahab, and later reprised the role in a 1930 sound remake; the success of the two films, despite their dubious link to Melville's prose, can be seen as part of the Melville revival that began in 1924 with the posthumous publication of Billy Budd.

The first hour of Get Rich or Die Tryin' is fairly involving, thanks to Sheridan's keen eye for detail and the efficient, if derivative, screenplay by Terence Winter ("The Sopranos").

As with 8 Mile, which starred 50 Cent's mentor Eminem, the plot of Get Rich or Die Tryin' is heavily autobiographical.

Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2005)
Scripted by former "Sopranos" writer Terence Winter, "Get Rich" aspires to be the new "Godfather," layering on a thick world of hoodlums and their dirty deeds.
The loosely autobiographical 50 Cent vehicle, "Get Rich or Die Trying'" doesn't share the same aspirations; instead, it's overwhelmed by the temptation to exploit the urban criminal underworld and gangsta mayhem, leaving out crucial clues as to why 50 Cent is the star he is today.
What ends up tripping "Get Rich" the most is both the screenplay and Sheridan's inability to successfully convey Marcus's desire to express himself in the rap world.
