Terminal emulator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A terminal emulator, terminal application, term, or tty for short, is a program that emulates a "dumb" video terminal within some other display architecture.
The ubiquitous Unix terminal window is used for both local and remote access; where the connection goes is not the business of the terminal emulator itself, it just communicates through a pseudo terminal interface.
In raw mode, text passes directly from the terminal or PTY (a device node that a program wishing to emulate a terminal binds to) to the TTY device.

Terminal Window Definition   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
The terminal window derives its name from the fact that it emulates the text-only monitor and keyboard combinations that were commonly used for earlier generations of multi-user computers and which were referred to as terminals or consoles.
Terminal windows allow any other windows that are open on the GUI (including other terminal windows) to remain open at the same time that the terminal window is open.
Terminal windows can be opened and closed just like other programs: i.e., they can be opened by clicking on an icon, selecting the appropriate menu item or even issuing a command from another terminal window.

Text-Terminal-HOWTO: Terminal Special Files such as /dev/tty
Pseudo terminals are pairs of devices such as /dev/pty/m3 and /dev/pty/s3 (or respectively /dev/ptyp3 and /dev/ttyp3 if you're not using the device filesystem).
But if a program treats s3 (ttyp3) like it was a serial port, what is read and written to that port appears on the other member of the pair m3 (ptyp3) which another program uses to read and write to.
The master and slave are really the same "port" but the slave is used by the application program and the master is used by a network program (or the like) which supplies (and gets) data to/from the slave port.

Terminal Emulation Intro - OIT Help Desk   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Because your communications program is making your computer act like a terminal that is under the control of our host machine, that language is called your terminal type, or terminal emulation.
Some terminals were smarter than others, with screens that could do all sorts of things, and could change the language they were speaking at the flick of a switch (or in response to an order from the remote machine).
If your program doesn't, you won't know what are regular text characters and what are control sequences, so you will end up seeing them all on the screen, as if they were text, resulting in pure and utter garbage.

Terminal Memory The image on a CRT tube will fade away almost instantly unless it is frequently redrawn on the screen by a beam of electrons shot onto the face of the tube.
Since text sent to a terminal needs to stay on the screen, the image on the screen must be stored in the memory chips of the terminal and the electron beam must repeatedly scan the screen (say 60 times per second) to maintain the image.
