Pretreatment of ethanolic extract of Terminalia chebula fruits at 500 mg/kg body wt in rats was found to ameliorate the effect of isoproterenol on lipid peroxide formation and retained the activities of the diagnostic marker enzymes.
The concentration of 'Triphala' a combination of Terminalia chebula, T.belerica, Emblica officinalis, that inhibited 50% of lipid peroxidation induced with Fe(2+)/ascorbate were 85.5, 27, 74 and 69 mcg/ml, respectively and 100 mg/kg b.w.
The aqueous extract of Terminalia chebula acts as a potent antioxidant and since it is able to protect cellular organelles from the radiation-induced damage, it may be considered as a probable radioprotector.
