Columbian College established in 1821, and the namesake of Columbia Heights, was west of Howard University along 14th Street until it moved downtown in 1884.
This was a toll road in the 1800's that lead from Washington's central market near the Capitol to the rural areas in Maryland and Pennsylvania.
The Columbia Heights area, at the time, was considered the healthful place to go to escape Washington's summer heat, humidity and malarial fevers.

Strangely enough I now live in Edgewater, NJ and from my windows I can see Washington Heights, the bridge, the little lighthouse etc. I used to think that it was just me, my sister and a few friends that felt this way about Washington Heights., but I guess our perceptions are real.
I lived in the heights on Riverside DR, and 158th ST. We use to go sleigh riding at dead mans hill at 155th St. I remember bowling at Falcaros bowling alley, which was in the 181 ST. subway station.
I too grew up in post WW II Washington Heights and was happy to find this forum that brought back such fond memories of the old neighborhood.
