The Terrace of the Elephants is part of the walled city of Angkor Thom, a ruined temple complex in Cambodia.
The terrace was used by Angkor's king Jayavarman VII as a platform from which to view his victorious returning army.
The terrace is named for the carvings of elephants on its eastern face.

 A Place Called Terrace Park
It was commonplace to see an elephant pulling a plow for a spring garden, and to come across a string of elephants being exercised for street parades, each holding with its trunk to the tail of the one ahead.
Once the estate of Terrace Park pioneer William L. Spooner, it was bought by Thomas J. Emery in 1897 and given to the Fresh Air and Convalescent Aid Society to provide summer recreation for inner city youngsters and their parents, who came out, 250 at a time, for a week of countrified life.
Terrace Park's "little red schoolhouse", according to an old reminiscence, was built about 1840, adjacent to the present school, and was indeed a small frame structure painted red.

The terrace of the Elephants in its present form extends in length for over 300 metres - from the Baphuon to the terrace of the Leper King - though the two extremities remain imprecise in their layout and the terrace itself shows evidence of additions and alterations.
Above, the various changes in level are marked with lions sculpted in the round and naga-balustrades on blocks with garudas on their hoods, clearly in the style of the Bayon - except for a few earlier ones that have no garuda.
The upper terrace - from where one can see the enclosure walls and the eastern gopura below of the earlier Royal Palace - has two levels with a four metre wide border towards the square and an upper platform of 10 metres, with a base sculpted with "Hamsas" (sacred geese).

The statue which gave the terrace its name has been replaced by a replica.
The Terrace of the Leper King (or Leper King Terrace) is located in the northwest corner of the Royal Square of Angkor Thom, Cambodia.
It was built in the Bayon style under Jayavarman VII, though its modern name derives from a 15th century sculpture discovered at the site.

Returning to the south side, one enters the internal corridor where the decor, set on a lower frieze of fish, elephants and the representation of a river running vertically, follows with the same elements as the exterior but is here enhanced with apsaras.
From the north-west corner of the Terrace of the Leper King one can then reach the Large Buddha of Tep Pranam along a track - without having to re-descend the stair on the south side or take the road again.

It was a trip, we sat on a long padded seat (it fit the 2 of us perfectly) and it was a very comfortable ride.
You don't realize just how large an elephant is until you ride on its back.
Then we stayed up there for awhile and took pictures of the sunset, and then took another elephant ride back down.
