Terragen 2 is capable of rendering billions of polygons in a single scene.
Terragen 2 supports vegetation, using 3D models from a variety of sources, including XfrogPlants models from greenworks/xfrog, inc.
Terragen features a number of high level shaders which create more complex scene elements, such as clouds or rocks, as well as a low level function node system which allows you to create shaders from "first principles", using functions and methods that will be familiar to shader writers.

Bob_The_Beheader: Terragen is a great piece of software, but you have to be careful when working with it, as the temptation exists to "overdo it," and create very complicated environments that, in the end, don't look very good...
I'm very glad that Terragen now incorporates realtime preview rendering, because it was a pain in the ass to have to do a rendering preview every time you wanted to see what would show up on the output images.

Terragen creates the terrain surface from a vector based elevation model - much the same as Bryce and most other terrain generating algorithms, but to make this terrain surface look more realistic, Terragen encorporates a set of interesting functions to create texture maps.
Terragen allows you to create 'multi-channel' texture maps for your terrain surface by making use of a series of layers, which you can constrain in a number of ways.
Terragen makes use of complex and powerful algorithms to generate realistic terrain scenes, but it is very easy to use.

 Terragen
Terragen has been used in a variety of commercial applications including film, television and music videos, games and multimedia, books, magazines and print advertisements.
Terragen has a native user interface, using facilities provided by the operating system of the respective platform, as opposed to the custom user interfaces used by many similar applications.
This means Terragen can follow the usage conventions of each platform as closely as possible, which ensures that it looks and feels just like the other applications you use and means there is no learning curve with respect to the basic operation of Terragen.

Skybox (2D) with Terragen - Valve Developer Community
Terragen (http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/) is a freeware scenery generator which can be used to create 2D skyboxes.
In source engine games making terrain is not recommended for a 2D skybox, since Source has 3D skyboxes; however, it can often be a good idea to use the tool to create a downwards facing texture to use on a displacement map in you skybox, like de_inferno in CSS.
Place your Terragen camera where you want the viewpoint of the skybox to be.

 Terragen animation extension
The basic work flow is to create a tgs file using Terragen or plugins, use tgs_interp to read this tgs file and instruct it to create a number of other tgs files which will then be read and rendered by Terragen.
Note that the QuickTime VR support in terragen isn't quite good enough for creating fisheye animations because the faces of the cube in that case are aligned with the coordinate axes rather than the camera view direction.
Obviously future versions of terragen may change details of the tgs files that this utility assumes, or new features may be added for which this utility is ignorant.

 The Terragen Sphere
Terragen colonized space - the so-called Terragen Sphere or Terragen Bubble - stretches thousands of light years from SolSys in every direction; expanding outwards at close to the speed of light, as further worlds are settled on the periphery.
Billions of stars and planets, and countless trillions of moons, asteroids, comets, orbitals, and habitats can be found in the 300 billion cubic light years of settled space.
And while the image of the Outer Sphere backworlds as a lawless frontier inhabited only pirates and outlaws and technologically impoverished "barbies" is a parochial fantasy and prejudice on the part of inner sphere dwellers, there are many ambiguous, and even some hazardous, areas here.
