Runner (born on July 28, 1958, at Winnipeg, Man.; died on June 28, 1981, at New Westminister, B.C. Fox was a student when, in 1977, doctors discovered that he had a rare form of bone cancer.
While he was recovering, Fox had the idea for a "Marathon of Hope." He would run across Canada to raise money for cancer research.
He ran at a pace of nearly 40 km per day and had run 5373 km when he reached Thunder Bay, Ont. Then cancer was discovered in his lungs, and the marathon ended.
