Terrebonne dates back to 1853 and was first incorporated as a city in 1860 and then again in 1985, following the merger with the parish municipality of Saint-Louis-de-Terrebonne, created in 1855.
The fact that Terrebonne was incorporated as a city as early as 1860 is testimony to the importance it had in the second half of the 19th century.

Terrebonne Parish (LST-1156) was laid down as LST-1156 on 2 January 1952 at Bath, Maine, by the Bath Iron Works; launched on 9 August 1952; sponsored by Miss Anne L. McCrea; and commissioned on 21 November 1952, Lt. Comdr.
Terrebonne Parish conducted yearly deployments to the Mediterranean, with periodic overhauls and exercises, through 1961.
Terrebonne Parish commenced her 7th Mediterranean deployment on 30 March 1967 when she embarked marines of the 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, at Morehead City and crossed the Atlantic in company with four minesweepers of Mine Division 83.

The Terrebonne Basin is an abandoned delta complex, characterized by a thick section of unconsolidated sediments that are undergoing dewatering and compaction, contributing to high subsidence, and a network of old distributary ridges extending southward from Houma.
The southern end of the basin is defined by a series of narrow, low-lying barrier islands (the Isles Dernieres and Timbalier chains), separated from the mainland marshes by a series of wide, shallow lakes and bays (e.g., Lake Pelto, Terrebonne Bay, Timbalier Bay).
The Terrebonne Basin supports about 155,000 acres of swamp and almost 574,000 acres of marsh, grading from fresh marsh inland to brackish and saline marsh near the bays and the gulf.
