EMARDVILLE township received its name in honor of Pierre Emard, who was born in Longueuil on the St. Lawrence river in Canada, opposite to Montreal, in 1835, and came to Minnesota in 1878, settling as a homesteader in section 24, Red Lake Falls.
GERVAIS township was named in honor of Isaiah Gervais, who was born at Fort Garry (now Winnipeg), Manitoba, December 10, 1831 ; came to Minnesota, and lived in St. Paul; settled as a homestead farmer in section 26, Red Lake Falls, in 1876; and died there, November 2, 1888.
TERREBONNE township has a French name, meaning good land, received from the county and town of this name in the Province of Quebec.

The prosperity and growth of the community of Terrebonne, like that of many other promising villages in the early part of the century, did not continue when it was by-passed by the railroad lines.
Terrebonne is a French name, and when translated into every-day English, means 'good earth,' and is not a misnomer, for the best land in Red Lake County is tributary to this sprightly village.
Because the early records of Terrebonne Township were not able to be found, dates of the township organization and early officers are not known.

The name Lake Agassiz was given this prehistoric glacial lake by Warren Upham in 1879 in the Eighth Annual Report of the Minnesota Geological Survey.According to Upham, the first true explanation of the lake's existence was presented by a geologist professor of the university in 1872.
After a time, Pierre returned to Osseo, Minnesota (a town he also founded and where he had been living) to move the rest of his family here, leaving the two young men to care for the little house and garden.
In 1956 she further distinquished herself and focused the attention of Oklee and the entire country by becoming the first woman from the State of Minnesota to be elected by the people of the 9th District to the Congress of the United States where she served for two terms in the House of Representatives.
