Terrell County (K-9) is in the Big Bend area of southwestern Texas, bordered on the south by Mexico, on the east by Val Verde and Crockett counties, on the north by Pecos County, and on the west by both Pecos and Brewster counties.
Terrell County was formed by an act of the Texas legislature on April 8, 1905, and organized on July 27 of that year.
Terrell County's population rose gradually from 1,430 in 1910 to 2,680 by 1920 and to 2,952 by 1930.

Sanderson, Texas was established in 1882, ordinally called Strobridge, named for a construction superintendent on the railroad.
The handbook of Texas describes early Sanderson as, frequented by gunmen, outlaws, rustlers, and border bandits; one of them being Pancho Villa.
There were not enough Texas Rangers to protect the land, so the Government provided the feed for the ranchers horses, if the ranchers would provide their own protection.

Watkins was on the Texas and New Orleans Railroad and Thurston Canyon seven miles upstream from Malvado in southeastern Terrell County.
Watkins was named for a roadmaster who worked for the railroad at the time the tracks were built through Terrell County.
In 1934 the GHandSA railroad was acquired by the Texas and New Orleans.

I made my journey from Arizona into West Texas and spent the previous day visiting a few highpoints in the region, before staying at a hotel in Fort Stockton.
Very early the next morning (today) I drove the 70 miles to Sanderson, the Terrell County Seat, then another 9 miles west along US-90 to the Ninemile Ranch gates where I was told Jody would meet us.
