  Volunteer Regiments of the British Army: Overview
The Territorial Force did not originally extend to Ireland or the UK dependencies of the Isle of Man and Channel Islands, but in 1947 TA units were formed in Northern Ireland from war-raised battalions.
The Territorial Force was mobilised in August 1914, whereupon its units became full-time combattants on a par with the regular army.
Territorial Force units were disembodied during demobilisation in 1918 and reconstituted in 1920 as the part-time Territorial Army.

The Territorial Force was originally formed by the Secretary of State for War, Richard Burdon Haldane, following the passage of the "Territorial and Reserve Forces Bill" on August 2, 1907 and contained 14 infantry divisions, each administered by a County Association.
Territorial Force battalion numbers were prefixed with '1', for instance the 1/5th Battalion, the East Surrey Regiment.
Territorial units initially saw service in Egypt and India and other Empire garrisons such as Gibraltar, thereby releasing regular units for service in France and enabling the formation of an additional five regular army divisions (for a total of eleven) by early 1915.

 TA and Cadets
In 1908 these battalions were converted into the Territorial Force and the 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th Battalions of The Royal Scots (Territorial Force) were created.
After the war the Territorial Force was reorganised into the Territorial Army (TA.) and The Royal Scots retained the 4th (Queens Edinburgh Rifles), 5th (Queens Edinburgh Rifles), 7th (Leith) and 9th (Highlanders) Battalions.
In 1982 the T.A.V.R. reverted to the old title of the Territorial Army.

This action was found by the Huntingdonshire Territorial Association to be totally unacceptable, but in order not to prejudice the formation of the new Battalion agreed to support the enrolment for the 2 companies of men to be raised into the Bedfordshire Regiment as well as to prepare to recruit all the Officers and men.
Territorial Association are not open to the public, nor do I remember ever seeing a representative of the Press present, which I am sure is to be regretted, I have been requested to review the events which have led to the consummation of such a desirable issue.

The Territorial Force Battalions were numbered after the Regular Reserve Battalions and often had second titles linking them with the home town or county of the Battalion: i.e.
The Territorial Reserve Battalions of each Regiment were amalgamated to form one Reserve Battalion, or in the case of the large Regiments two Battalions.The groups which had been formed, now became 14 Reserve Brigades Territorial Force.
The Territorial Reserve Battalions remained this way for the rest of the war.Some 3rd line Battalions were sent overseas, when this was the case a 4th line Battalion was formed and this took the role of the 3rd line Battalion explained here.

The 1907 Territorial and Reserve Forces Act required counties to form Territorial Associations and it was up to these associations to decide upon the composition of the volunteer forces within their own boundries.
The threat of a European war once again brought the Territorial Force into the focus of attention and great emphasis was placed on dismounted training at squadron and troop level; it was appreciated that the days of mounted regiment and brigade drills were probably over.

Minister of Defence Phil Goff yesterday said the Territorial Force would provide the majority of personnel deploying to peacekeeping roles in the Solomon Islands in the next 12 months.
Personnel were chosen on their experience and ability to commit to a four-month deployment and the pre-deployment training period.

This is unusual and Stock seems to have been serving in the Hejaz as part of a small unit comprised of territorial's from various infantry and yeomanry Regts with particular railway skills.
The battalion embarked on the SS Winifredian on the 15th September arriving in Havre the next day, ironically for Pte Crosley the last goodbye was sounded from the signal station on the Isle of White as the Winifredian left Southampton and crossed the channel to France.
