Terror of the Autons - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Terror of the Autons is a serial in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, which was first broadcast in four weekly parts from January 2 to January 23, 1971.
UNIT troops engage the Autons while the Doctor and Jo pursue the Master into the facility's control room where the Master is opening the radio frequency for the Nestene invasion force to come through.
The Nestenes and their Auton automata first appeared in the 1970 serial, Spearhead from Space and are the first monsters to appear in the revived 2005 series, in the episode Rose.

Auton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Autons are essentially life sized plastic dummies, animated by the Nestene Consciousness, an extraterrestrial, disembodied gestalt intelligence which first arrived on Earth in hollow plastic meteorites.
The Nestenes' first attempt to invade the Earth, using these more human-looking Autons to replace key government figures, was thwarted by UNIT with the help of the Doctor, who also destroyed their invasion form, a multi-tentacled cephalopod.
The filming of scenes involving the Autons were witnessed by the public at a location shoot in Cardiff for the 2006 series in March 2006.

The Taming of the Autons by Brett Walther
Terror Of The Autons marks the change that would set the tone for the majority of the Pertwee era, as season eight is more "cosy" than the gritty season seven, even if some of the realism still remains.

BBC - h2g2 - Doctor Who Enemies: Autons
Autons themselves were no more than animated plastic, whether that be in the form of tailor's dummies, mannequins, dolls, armchairs or replica daffodils - even exact plastic replicas of people.
Unfortunately, the plan backfired somewhat as, in 'Terror of the Autons', there were scenes of children's toys mauling adults and, most controversially, policemen that were revealed to be killer Autons.
Although they were never referred to as Autons in the episode, the shop window dummies were once again controlled by the Nestene Consciousness and were clearly intended to replicate the 1970s originals (even down to the sound effect used for their wrist guns).

 Auton - Tardis
The Nestenes' first attempt to invade the Earth, using the human-looking Autons to replace key government figures, was thwarted by UNIT with the help of the Doctor, who also destroyed their invasion form, which manifested in the corporeal form of a multi-tentacled cephalopod.
The Doctor convinced the Master that the Nestenes were too dangerous to be reliable allies, and they reversed the radio beam the invasion force was coming in on, sending it back into space ("Terror of the Autons").
This latest invasion force also made use of Auton facsimiles that could change the shape of their features and limbs, and were animated by the Nestenes via telepathic projection.

As might be expected from a Robert Holmes story, ‘Terror of the Autons’ has some great dialogue and excellent characterisation, but it also signals a considerable change in emphasis for the series in comparison with ‘Inferno’.
The second character that debuts in ‘Terror of the Autons’ and represents a downward slide is Captain Yates.
The Autons themselves are less successful due to the change in their appearance; in their debut story, they had hollow empty eye sockets and sculpted, pouting mouths, which gave them an eerie, zombie-like feeling.

The scenes with the Autons are all particularly strong, with scenes such as Ransom being stalked at the plastics factory and the window-dummies coming alive both being classic moments in the history of the program.
Terror Of The Autons is also entertaining, the Master tended to steal the Autons' thunder.
While the Autons are convincing, the Nestene consciousness is pants, and this is a particular shame as the unfortunate mass of rubber tentacles makes up the climax to the story, though once it dies, the Autons suddenly collapsing as though their strings had been cut at least partly makes up for it.
