Topic: Terror of the Vervoids

In the News (Fri 25 Dec 09)

Terror of the Vervoids - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Terror of the Vervoids is the title commonly used for a serial in the British science fiction television series Doctor Who, which was first broadcast in four weekly parts from November 1 to November 22, 1986.
The Vervoids are about to attack Mel, but he deploys the metal and the intense light kills all the Vervoids.
When Target Books published Pip and Jane Baker's novelisation, it was under the title of Terror of the Vervoids, which is now generally used to refer to the story (see The Ultimate Foe and Doctor Who story title controversy).

 Outpost Gallifrey: Reviews
Ultimately of course, the greatest contribution of 'Terror of the Vervoids' to the trial is the fact that it causes the charge against the Doctor to be changed.
The Vervoids are well designed if a little rubbery in execution, and in terms of the story their instinctive antipathy towards all animal life makes a peaceful solution possible; the result is a rare attempt for the Sixth Doctor's era at a real monster story, and it is more than welcome.
Terror of the Vervoids is a very good story with only one central flaw.

Terror of the Vervoids is the worst, the most appalling, the most mind-numbingly awful Doctor Who story (including all of the New and Missing Adventures) that has ever been made.
Terror of the Vervoids is a predictable, cosy murder mystery, which I enjoyed in spite of myself - and in spite of a clumsy, rushed ending.
Terror Of The Vervoids is the most successful and enjoyable segment of The Trial Of A Time Lord largely because it remains very much a story in its own right and is for the most part free of scenes set inside the courtroom which are best intrusive and disturb the flow of the tale.

Terror of the Vervoids is a wonderful story, a delightful blending of murder mystery and monster story.
But Terror of the Vervoids doesn't stand on its own: it's the third part of The Trial of a Time Lord.
Terror of the Vervoids is a classic Doctor Who story, let down only by some extremely unlikely lines.

Mindwarp was another season 22-type story, Terror of the Vervoids was an inferior Robots of Death with flowers and vegetables, and The Ultimate Foe was incoherent, and derivate of The Deadly Assassin.
Terror of the Vervoids is, in general, better, but there's this one quality that makes it less than it could be...now what was that...ah yes,...MEL.
Vervoids doesn't call for much giggles but then people are dying in droves and yet there's still time to watch the Doctor slacking on the exercise bike every time Mel looks away.

Doctor Who story title controversy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The third segment was commissioned as The Ultimate Foe and the fourth as Time Incorporated but confusingly the latter was novelised as The Ultimate Foe whilst the former was novelised as Terror of the Vervoids.
The authors of the third story and some other production team members have consistently referred to it as The Vervoids in subsequent interviews but this title is not known to exist in any contemporary paperwork.
Matters are further confused by fierce debate as to whether the whole Trial should be regarded as one story or four, with many who adopt the former stance merely referring to the whole thing as The Trial of a Time Lord.

The Trial of a Time Lord
She hears the Vervoids planning to kill all animalkind, but she is then attacked by someone who anaesthetizes her and hides her body into the waste disposal cart.
The Vervoids attack in force, killing the waste disposal technician and trapping Janet and several ship’s officers in the lounge.
Once all the Vervoids have assembled, the humans release the vionesium, and the chemical reaction accelerates the Vervoid life cycle, causing them all to age and decay to mulch within seconds.

He chooses an incident from his own future, in which he and his companion Mel arrive on the space liner Hyperion III in response to a distress call.
Arguably the most successful segment of the story as a whole is the third one, featuring the Vervoids.
This is partly because the irritating courtroom scenes are kept to a minimum, allowing the story to flow rather better than during the other segments, but mainly because the scripts themselves are entertaining and quite easy to follow, complemented by Chris Clough's well paced and stylish direction.

"Terror Of The Vervoids" is probably the best of the Trial stories simply because it's not interrupted as much as the others.
"Terror Of The Vervoids" therefore becomes a logical paradox.
The Doctor wasnt on trial for the vervoids part, it was his evidence to try and clear his name, the point is still valid about the paradox but the Time Lords were not putting him on trial for the future events.

On the other it's got lots of flaws and shortcomings that really irritate me. The good stuff first: There's a fairly large cast, which adds a bit to the realism, and the Mogarians are quite unusual for a DW alien race.
The Vervoid grafted to a human [perhaps this was how they learned English?] was also fairly good -- not quite as good as the similar conversions in "Ark in Space" or "Seeds of Doom", but still pretty good.
I submit the theory that Vervoids _should_ have happened right after Mel joined the TARDIS, but because of the trial, this is changed and Terror of the Vervoids never happened.

In addition to this, I'm suddenly forced to realize exactly why so many fans dislike Mel.
Whilst I liked her in 'Terror of the Vervoids', she's simply awful here, partly because of the horrid dialogue Langford is given and partly because, with circumstances meaning that the character has less opportunity to enjoy herself here, Mel suddenly becomes shrill and irritating.
Also, Langford's acting suddenly takes a nose-dive, a fact that is especially obvious when she has to deliver the line "the Doctor's convinced he has to sacrifice himselfÂ… and you're content to let him!".
