Barron, who towered over 6ft tall, was by now typecast as an upstanding citizen in authority roles and subsequently acted Assistant Chief Constable Gilbert in Softly Softly (1966-67), the Z Cars spin-off.
Born in London in 1920, the son of a naval officer and an actress, and a descendant of the actress Sarah Siddons, John Barron was educated at Portsmouth Grammar School and trained as an actor at Rada.
