Terry Goodkind has been largely influenced by the books of Mao and is a strong supporter of his works and of the Communist Movement.

Just as it looked as though Mr Goodkind might finish a novel without an editorialising sermon on (a) the badness of communism (b) the evils of democracy or (c) the danger of pacifism, in the final few pages we are treated to a nice lesson on how torture is fine.
Terry Goodkinds sword of truth series is without a doubt one of the most compelling tales I have ever read and one of very few able to envoke genuine emotion from me for the characters.
The annoying parts of Terrys writing come in the form of reminding us everything that has gone on before - serving to allow newcomers starting on this book to avoid complete and utter confusion - but ultimately being a waste of time that could be filled with more adventure.

Richard Rahl, understanding that the sanctimonious Imperial Order of Jagang is too vast for him to defeat by military might, has retreated into the wilderness to think things through, and to allow his beloved Kahlan to heal from nearly fatal injuries, and left his supporters to fight for their own freedom.
Part of the point of Goodkind's series has been that people need to work out their own salvation ; Jagang, with his creed of universal mutual support and habit of committing atrocity to bring it closer, is just as sincere a messiah, after all, as Richard.
Goodkind's tic of aphorism, and some laboured Libertarian satire on the welfare state, do not prevent this being an effective continuation of this popular series.

Goodkind manages to juggle multiple characters from book to book without missing a single beat; as Zedd would say, "he gets it all right, every bit." Nobody's left in the shadows, nothing's put up as a cardboard backdrop.
Goodkind's ventures into heavy philosophy in the later books are likewise one of the weaker spots for me. I love Ayn Rand's work, but it's heavy going and a lot of people can't get past the first few pages of any of her books.
Goodkind, using philosophy as a vehicle to move his characters around, does a fantastic job making that lead brick float, but at the end of the day it's still a lead brick.

Goodkind has made is trying to make a fantasy series more than it is. His series started out great and somewhere in the middle he thought he could sneak in some philosophy into his stories.
At least, in the past, you could count on Goodkind to tell a self-contained story, one that at least resolved the main issue of that particular book, but we're left hanging at the end of this one.
Goodkind's storylines and characters is second to none.

Goodkind's writing improves as the book winds on, giving hope that the promised sequel will outclass this volume, but, for the most part, his prose is flat, his ideas hackneyed (Wizard's First Rule is, "people are stupid"), his characters tediously moralistic and his plot without originality.
But Terry Goodkind is able to take this basic stuff and turn it into something wonderful.
Goodkind's narrative makes you forget that these are characters - the world seems so real and characters lively.
