Terry Reid, (born November 13, 1949), is a singer and guitarist noted for his soulful voice in the same vein as contemporaries Paul Rodgers and Rod Stewart.
Reid suggested to Page that he hear a young Birmingham singer Robert Plant instead having previously experienced the Band of Joy as a support act at one of his concerts.
Reid however became involved in a dispute with producer Mickie Most, who wanted Reid to become a balladeer and to strictly follow his own formula.

Terry Reid (born November 13, 1949, Huntingdon, England) is a rock singer and guitarist noted for his soulful voice in the same vein as contemporaries Paul Rodgers and Rod Stewart.
Reid suggested to Page that he consider a young Birmingham singer, Robert Plant, instead, having previously seen Plant's Band of Joy as a support act at one of his concerts.
Reid later turned down an offer to join Deep Purple when they decided to replace singer Rod Evans; Ian Gillan was given the position instead.

 TERRY REID - SUPERLUNGS
Born in 1949, Reid's vocal talents were apparent at a very early age, belting out the hits of the day perched atop a ladder at the age of 5 while his mother worked as a fruit-picker.
At 16 he caught the eye of Peter Jay, leader of The Jaywalkers who made Terry the front man. The power and conviction of Terry's performances led the band to be asked by The Rolling Stones and Ike and Tina Turner to support them during their 1966 fall tour.
Reid's high voice and delivery is reminiscent of the vocals Robert Plant recorded for Led Zeppelin just several months later, not to mention how Terry's composition "July" echoes the opening half of "Stairway To Heaven," predating that classic by nearly two years.

Reid may have missed an opportunity with Zeppelin, but he continued on with another album in 1969, “Move Over for Terry Reid”, to little commercial acclaim.
Reid’s voice starts low, but then soars over the beautiful, chorus of “…if you think that life is too unbearable to a wild flyer, may fly…” It sounds simple, but once again, his vocals can send chills down ones spine.
Why Terry Reid isn’t the household name he should be is quite the mystery at times when you listen to the amazing tracks on this album.

Unlike Plant, Reid was also a guitarist, and the opportunity to head his own group no doubt played a part in his decision to gun for a solo career.
Reid's high voice was reminiscent of Robert Plant's, though not nearly as shrill, and his folky numbers especially are reminiscent of Led Zeppelin's most acoustic early cuts.
Reid would release albums for other labels in 1976 and 1979, but none of his '70s recordings were well-received, critically or commercially (though 1976's Seed of Memory did briefly chart).

Terry Reid: Terry Reid : Music Reviews : Rolling Stone
Bound as he is to producer Mickie Most, who's good when he's interested and unthinkably horrid when he's not, as is obviously the case here, it's surprising that Terry Reid continues to even try to record and almost startling that he can come up with so good an album as this.
Reid has a large helping of musical maturation ahead of him before he gains sufficient control of his sometimes-fiery freak voice (a cross between Steve Marriott's and Janis Joplin's, with maybe a dash of Robert Plant as well, if you can imagine that) to become a really effective rock shrieker.
Reid himself does a most noteworthy job with the Dylan tune, which is tailor-made for his scat-singing capabilities.

Reid was desperate to move on from the restrictions imposed by the "gotta-gotta"-ings of the Soul circuit, in order to experiment within what was by now an entirely newly-emergent Rock scene.
Reid next turned his attentions towards the US market (which was seemingly far more receptive to English Rock shouters at the tail end of the 60's) where he managed to sneak a slot supporting Cream, playing several prestige gigs with them - notabl y the Miami Pop Festival.
So, he approached Reid and offered him the voca list's spot (one wonders what Led Zeppelin would have sounded like with two guitars onstage) only to be rebuffed; in addition to his commitments to Most, Reid had a couple of US tours lined up, and was confidently expecting to make it as a solo performer.

Reid opens with an eight-minute-plus version of the Eddie Cochran classic “Summertime Blues” (a tune that was to be adopted the following year by the Who as their staple closer).
Reid faded into obscurity after his third LP was virtually ignored by critics and fans, but he returned with comeback albums in 1991 and again in 1994.

Terry Reid: Superlungs - PopMatters Music Review
Not that Reid wouldn't have been a more than capable singer -- of all the white blues-rock shouters to come out of England, he's probably the most prodigiously talented -- but who knows what sort of butterfly effect would have been set off.
Unfortunately for Reid, his failure to join either of the two most prominent hard-rock bands in history, combined with the garden-variety assortment of legal troubles and distribution snafus sent him directly to unwarranted semi-obscurity.
The better part of Reid's talent lies in how natural and inevitable he can make his vocal impossibilities sound; while hearing one of his interpretations, no matter how tortuous, it's hard to imagine the song sounding any other way.
