Sawchuk is considered by many to be one of the greatest goaltenders to ever play the game, having won 447 games and recorded 103 shutouts.
Terry Sawchuk was born and raised in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, and played hockey on an outdoor rink.
In 1971, Sawchuk was posthumously elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame and awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy for his contribution to hockey in the United States.

Sawchuk had a tough childhood, losing his brother to a heart ailment when he was 10 years old.

On Oct. 14, Sawchuk’s Indianapolis career began with a bang, as 6,360 fans saw him assume his famous “Gorilla Crouch” — a deep crouch where his knees and torso were severely bent, and his shoulders practically touched his knees -- and backstop a 5-1 win over the Buffalo Bisons at the Coliseum.
Then, as the season’s end drew closer, Sawchuk and the Caps caught fire, going 11-5-2 over the final month and a half of the season, but the team was a distant second to Cleveland in the AHL West.
Sawchuk was posthumously awarded the Lester Patrick Trophy in 1971 for his service to hockey.

Sawchuk was only 10 at the time of his brother's death, and so when the regular goalie on his bantam team moved away, Sawchuk laced up his brother's pads.
Sawchuk quickly caught the eye of NHL scouts, and at 17, he celebrated his signing bonus with the Detroit Red Wings by rolling in $2000 worth of small bills after returning from the bank to his Windsor, Ontario, hotel room.
Sawchuk was fatally injured in the altercation and on 31 May 1970, the hockey player considered by many to be the best to ever strap on goalie pads, died.

Terry died of injury related complications on May 31, 1970 in New York City after an alcohol induced shoving match with his roommate and teammate Ron Stewart (no punches were ever thrown by either man).

With Glenn Hall ready to step in and play, Sawchuk was traded to Boston, where he spent 2 unhappy years, suffering from mononucleosis, depression, and homesickness, which caused him to walk out on his team in the middle of the 1956-57 season.
Sawchuk never regained his earlier dominating form, leading the Wings to the finals twice where they lost to Toronto both times, but he did manage to set one record that may never be equalled.
