World Series Summary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
The term "World Series" was first coined for a nine-game series between the Boston Pilgrims and the Pittsburgh Pirates, an informal outgrowth of a 1903 "peace treaty" signed between the two competing "major" baseball leagues, the 27-year-old National League (N.L.) and the upstart 2-year-old American League (A.L.).
The Series winner is determined through a best-of-seven playoff (except in 1903, 1919, 1920 and 1921 when the winner was determined through a best-of-nine playoff) and is awarded the World Series Trophy, as well as World Series rings.
Despite its name, the World Series is not a "world championship" in the same sense as the FIFA World Cup or the Cricket World Cup because it is not between national teams, but is limited to Major League Baseball teams, which represent individual cities and states (currently of the United States and Canada only).

PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL - SPECIAL EDITION 3-DISC GIFT SET DVD
Pirates of the Caribbean is that rarest of beasts: a blockbuster from twin uniqueness-vortexes Jerry Bruckheimer and Disney that is respectful of its Errol Flynn/swashbuckling genre, smart about itself and its audience, and infused with a sense of mischievous malice that forgives the occasional lag in pace or lapse in logic.
Pirates of the Caribbean, at its heart of fl hearts, is smarter than it has any right to be, ebullient somehow at an unwieldy 143 minutes and as violent a mainstream adventure yarn that is not R-rated as Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl Special Edition 3-Disc Set is the equivalent of a ten-day Roman binge: tasty, yes, but get thee to the vomitorium.

OK, I know that serials in the 40s were definitely B-features, but this is plain awful, especially in view of the fact that it was (loosely) based on one of the best comic strips of all time, chuck full of atmosphere, romance, great characters, and fine artwork.
William Tracy at age 23 does a pretty fair job with the role of Terry, trying hard to act young by letting his voice crack every little while and maintaining a high level of enthusiasm, and Jeff York is passable as Pat Ryan, given the material he has to work with.
Maybe the TV series in the 50s was better, I haven't seen it, but somehow I don't think so.

Cartoons'N Comics: Communication to the Quick
The comics are taken quite seriously -- by fans whose complaints deluge any newspaper that dares cancel a strip, by semi-literate adults who can find in them a sort of pictographic "Ann Landers" and certainly by historians and analysts of popular culture who regard the "funnies" as a revelatory aspect of cultural history.
Long before television or radio provided cross-country communication links, comic strip characters were known nationally.
Before movies were commonplace or television was conceived, comic strips were the storyboards from which later script writers would learn.

The Newton's first puppet creation, made especially for television was "Garfield Goose." So again, we need to take a close look at what those patents actually describe.
Although many of those who convert analog content into digital form are not engaging in any illegal conduct, there are a good number of criminals who take advantage of existing weaknesses in legislation and technology to obtain copyrighted content and then redistribute for profit at the copyright owner's expense.
