MUS 312 Form & Analysis, Study Guide L
Much of the music of the 20th century is also tertian; but there is a good deal of music using chords built from 2nds, 4ths, and from combinations of various intervals.
Tertian triads and 7th chords are an important, though perhaps less preponderant, part of the harmonic vocabulary of 20th-century art music.
Tertian sonorities "taller" than the 7th chord--e.g., 9th, 11th and 13th chords--are not an important part of the harmonic vocabulary before the late 19th or early 20th centuries.

 Tonality and Harmony: Chord Types
A tertian chord is made up of 3rds, e.g., major or minor triad (+ inversions), augmented or diminished chord (+inversions).
7th, 9th, 11th, and 13th chords are collectively called "extended tertian chords." In a four-part writing, it is customary to include the root (in the bass), the 3rd, the 7th, and the the note from which the chord gets its name, i.e., 9th, 11th, 13th (in the soprano).
An extended tertian chord, however, is often built on scale degree 5 to function as a dominant; 9th and 11th chords may be built on scale degree 2 and serve as a subdominant chord.
