Television Test Cards, Tuning Signals, Clocks and Idents
Of course special test generators were available that could be used to make accurate measurements of the performance of every aspect of the studio and distribution equipment, but again, how useful it would be to have a pattern that could give a rough indication of performance (or lack of it) from camera to screen.
Test Card W (16:9) that included almost all the features of Test Card F, had the central colour picture digitally remastered from the original colour reversal transparency, and had additional tests required for digital operations.
The BBC convention is for trade test cards to be allocated letters, while line-up charts are numbered, though when a new series of precision charts was developed by the BBC in 1958, numbered from 50 onwards, Test Cards D, E and F were given the numbers 54, 55 and 57 in that series.

Science Fair Projects - Test-card music
Test card music is the background music played during the broadcast of a test card by a television station.
Test card music became popular in its own right when a group of enthusiasts discovered one another and realised they were not alone in enjoying the music played during the day in the 1950s, 60s and 70s while the test card was broadcast on BBC.
The Test Card Circle, formed in the 1980s, is such a group of enthusiasts.

Test Card F is a test card that was created by the BBC and used on television in the United Kingdom and elsewhere for more than three decades.
Test Card J and Test Card W, which are digitally enhanced and widescreen versions respectively, have replaced it, although they themselves are very infrequently broadcast because the BBC now broadcasts BBC News 24 and Ceefax pages instead of a test card on its terrestrial channels.
On the updated Test Card J, the X on the noughts-and-crosses board is an indicator for aligning the centre of the screen.

Test card Information   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Originally, all test cards were actually physical cards at which a television camera was pointed, and such cards are still often used for calibration, alignment, and matching of cameras and camcorders.
Test patterns used for calibrating or troubleshooting the downstream signal path are nowadays generated by test signal generators, which do not depend on the correct configuration of (and presence of) a camera.
The most famous British test card is Test Card F which incorporates a colour photograph of Carole Hersee (daughter of BBC engineer George Hersee) playing noughts and crosses with a doll, used on the BBC and ITV from the beginning of colour broadcasts in the late 1960s.

 Test Card "F"
This was added by a separate caption-keyer downstream of the test card generator itself, and the style changed several times in the life of the test card with the changing style of the Networks' identification logos.
Rather than going back to the original transparency as was done for the new test cards J and W (presumably because slide-scanning technology wasn't good enough back in 1984), the producers of the electronic test card F grabbed a frame of the test card generated from the slide, and cut that into the background pattern.
The test card was created using four Z-80 based computers ("Zelda's" for anyone within the Corp. who remembers them), and unfortunately the pressures of the constraints meant that the finished test card had a few minor errors.

Card Sorting: How Many Users to Test (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox)
Testing ever-more users in card sorting has diminishing returns, but you should still use three times more participants than you would in traditional usability tests.
Much of the value from card sorting comes from listening to the users' comments as they sort the cards: knowing why people place certain cards together gives deeper insight into their mental models than the pure fact that they sorted cards into the same pile.
Card sorting is a generative method: we don't yet have a design, and our goal is to find out how people think about certain issues.

George Hersee, the SCPD ("Studio Capital Projects Department") engineer involved in the creation of the original Test Card F, and whose daughter, Carole, it is in the centre picture, died of a heart attack on Wednesday the 11th April 2001, aged 76.
The dots on the original Test Card F slide were circular, but they were made square (presumably for simplicity) on the electronic test card.
A second version of the test card was thus created without the dots in the greyscale, and the generator set to switch continuously between the two.

A test card, also known as a test pattern in North America, is a television test signal, typically broadcast at times when the transmitter is active, but no program is being broadcast (often at startup and closedown).
