TESTAMENT OF YOUTH - Based upon the 1933 autobiography of Vera Brittain, the five-part British miniseries Testament of Youth starred Cheryl Campbell in the central role.
A single-purposed idealist who intended to "make a difference" at a time when proper British women were expected to keep their opinions and ambitions to themselves, young Vera (Campbell) had her preconceptions and illusions shattered by the devastation of WWI.
The five 50-minute episodes of Testament of Youth were originally broadcast by the BBC in 1979, then were shown on the American public-TV anthology Masterpiece Theatre beginning November 11, 1980.

At the end of the day the youth ministries and youth leaders left standing will be those who were open to new ideas but worked incessantly to follow the principles of the “old economy” of the New Testament.
They challenge their teens to be empowered by the Spirit of God in everything, to know and apply God’s Word, to know what they believe and why they believe, to reach their friends for Christ and to make an eternal difference in the lives of others on this planet.

Tim Todd, designer-publisher of these special youth-targeted New Testament Bibles, says there is great hunger for God's word in public schools, and therefore great potential for impact among teens.
To date, more than 750,000 copies of the Truth For Youth Bible have been distributed to young people in an effort to respond to the liberal agenda that is being promoted in U.S. public schools.
Although the Truth For Youth Week outreach limits each household to one free Bible, those participants who want to give away more than one copy can purchase additional Bibles, specially discounted through August 6, from the website, "TheTruthforYouth.com," or can order them by phone at 1-800-733-4737.

Youth leaders seek an answer to the question, "How can I seek my own conversion and better serve youth by using the wisdom of the New Testament?" Becoming a New Testament Leader connects youth leaders' need to know the New Testament with the need to perfect their ministry skills.
Each book of the New Testament has from one to three reflections, each beginning with a focusing Scripture passage and followed by a simple presentation on a theme from that book of the Bible.
Both veteran and developing youth leaders as well as youth ministers, teachers, pastors, education directors, counselors, and others will benefit from its focus on every Christian's call to conversion as a foundation for ministry.

The idealism of youth wished to sweep away the old-fashioned prudery, the stifling inhibitions, hypocrisy, and moral strictures of their parents' generation--the Victorians.
The time between the turn of the century and the first World War was thus an extraordinary period of experimentation in the arts--with the Picassos, Stravinskys, Diaglihevs, Woolfs, and Joyces among the premier innovators, the "avant-garde" generation of artists.
This was to be the war "to end all wars," a war worthy of the lives of valiant young men and women, a war to vanquish the German "Huns" and bring the world together in peace at the end of a millennium--so rang out the peel of the propaganda machines of 1914.

Vera Brittain: A Feminist Life by Elizabeth Podnieks   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Vera Brittain is perhaps best known as the author of Testament of Youth, an autobiographical account of her experiences as a Volunteer Aid Detachment (vad) nurse during the First World War.
Born in 1893 in Newcastle-under-Lynne, Brittain grew up to reject the traditional, gendered dictates of her upper middle-class family and society, and determined to be a writer.
Noting that Brittain's feminism is the 'connecting thread' of her biography, Gorham illuminates how Brittain translated her experiences as a vad into narratives that radically challenged the profusion of Great War literature appearing in the 1920s which offered only male perspectives.

This book chronicles her life from 1900 to 1925, although it primarily concentrates on her war service as a nurse in Europe during World War I. Although Born 1925 begins where Testament of Youth ends, Born 1925 is a work of fiction.
Although Born 1925 is a self-contained novel, I would recommend that you also read Testament of Youth in order to understand Brittain's background and political leanings, as this gives much deeper meaning to Born 1925.
Unfortunatley, the large print editions of Born 1925 and Testament of Youth are both out-of-print, as is the standard print editions of Born 1925.
