Topic: Testimony of Equality

  Encyclopedia: Quakers
Fox was equally critical of many aspects of English culture besides religious dogma, particularly those that he saw as symptoms of pride and misuse of authority.
Traditionally messages, testimonies, ministry, or other speech are unprepared, and attenders are called on to discern the source of their inspiration—whether divine or ego.
The text of the Peace Testimony derives from a letter addressed to King Charles II of England, which tried to convince him that the Quakers had not been involved in a plot against him.

A Lively Concern: The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers)
All are equally invited to contribute to the spiritual journey of the group.
A major one is the equality of all human beings; another is a strong belief in nonviolence and opposition to war.
The Testimony on Equality ought to lead to a position of protection of the right to life of unborn children, as well as an understanding, through all the various insights offered by prolife feminism, of how abortion attacks the equality of women and men.

Testimonies cannot easily be taken one at a time, as they are interrelated.
Because of the peace testimony, Friends are often considered as one of the historic peace churches.
Also known as the Testimony of Truth, or Truth Testimony, the essence of the Testimony of Integrity is placing God at the center of one's life and refusing to place things other than God there—whether it be oneself, possessions, the regard of others, belief in principles or something else.

Equality is also a fundamental characteristic of Quaker organization and worship, with the lack of clergy and any formal hierarchy.
This belief in equality and sharing is in conflict with the spirit of a materialistic and individualistic age.
It is also a testimony of particular relevance in a multicultural and increasingly complex society in which there is an acute need for racial justice and for empathy between all faiths.

Historically, this includes Quakers' belief in and work towards equal rights for men and women, the abolition of slavery, educational reform, and improvement in conditions for prisoners and the mentally ill. Quakers also wrestle with the impact of racism and privilege.
The testimony of equality is based on the belief that there is that of God in everyone.
We are all equal in the eyes of God, and we need to remember to treat each other in ways that respect and honor our similarities and our differences.

This was reflected in the early days of Quakerism by the equal spiritual authority of women, and by the refusal to use forms of address that recognised social distinctions.
Equality is also a fundamental characteristic of Quaker organisation and worship, with the lack of clergy and any formal hierarchy.
The testimony to equality is concerned with the way in which our own life-styles and behaviour increase inequalities.

A meeting for business is considered a form of worship, and all decisions must be reached in a manner that satisfies all participants (called "unity" or "sense of the meeting," it is a unique form of consensus).
Using the technique of "expectant waiting", the Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business attempts to gain a sense of God's will for the community.

There are four testimonies that are fundamental to Quaker faith and practice, although it is important to note that Quaker faith is neither homogeneous nor monolithic.
Many Quakers believe that this is true regardless of sexual orientation as well although, unfortunately, there are still Friends who struggle to recognize and to honor that of God in gay, bi-, and transgendered individuals.
One of the implications of this testimony for Friends is that we are convinced that God may speak to us through the words of children as well as elders, through men as well as women, through men and women of color as well as white men and women, through Jews as well as gentiles.

If by "plain living" you mean the testimony of simplicity, that is expressed currently in Liberal Quaker Meeting by exploring ways to lessen our focus on materialist comforts and on careers at the expense of family.

Equality   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-15)
Friends testimony on equality is rooted in the holy expectation that there is that of God in everyone, including adversaries and people from widely different stations, life experiences, and religious persuasions.
The conviction that each person is equally a child of God opened the way for women to be leaders in the Society.
The testimony of equality does not imply that all individuals in a particular role are the same; it recognizes that the same measure of God's grace is available to everyone.

From my reading, the testimonies can be divided into three religious and four social testimonies; the former being the inspiration for the latter.
The testimony to peace is central to Quakers and is entirely inconsistent with war or preparation for it.
The testimony to equality recognises no barriers of gender, age, race or official status; not honoring one person over another (hence plain names not titles are used by Friends).

It has reached the point where frequently the monthly cost of family health insurance in Massachusetts is now equal to the monthly cost of a home mortgage payment or a rent payment.

My testimony will focus on the special features of the computer software industry that must be taken into account when considering Subpart F reform.

Biblical Basis of Friends Testimony of Equality
I think of the testimonies as being like "fruit of the Spirit" (Gal 5:22-23), outward manifestations or evidence that we are living in the Light of Christ.
This sense of equality in terms of material things is also reflected in Matthew 20:12, the parable of the people who worked all day and yet received the same wage as those who worked only a little.
It seems to me that the fundamental awareness behind Friends' testimony of equality is that of coming into our true equality before God; to go along with humanly-devised inequalities would be to fail in our testimony to the present and future reality of God's rule.

The Religious Coalition for the Freedom to Marry
The Religious Society of Friends has long stood for equality of human rights and against discrimination because we believe that each person is created in the image of God, possesses the spiritual capacity to respond to the divine and therefore is of precious worth.
However, this testimony of equality is often challenged when we are struggling to find God's will on the issues before us.
We invite Friends, whatever their leading on same-gender marriage under the care of meetings, to consider how they live up to the challenge to "help in the elimination of racial, sexual, ethnic, religious and other forms of discrimination and prejudice" when it comes the to civil benefits that states extend to married couples.

Equality North Dakota is a statewide gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender rights organization.
