In Ancient Roman warfare, the testudo or tortoise formation was a formation utilized commonly by the Roman Legions during battles, particularly sieges.
When used correctly, the testudo was an excellent shield against missile troops, and the legions could move with little fear of being slaughtered by arrow fire and javelins.
Other problems were that the front rank's faces and legs were still exposed; the formation couldn't move very quickly; and more powerful weapons (such as Eastern composite bows) could puncture the scutum and pin the soldiers' hands to their shields under prolonged fire, as occurred at Carrhae.

So strong is his power that four exact copies of the original statue have been installed in campus athletic facilities (one outside the Comcast Center and one on either side of the Gossett Football Team House) and at the Samuel Riggs IV Alumni Center--to spread his magic.

Testudo Mascot gets an Official Costume- Late 1970's
Testudo, the Diamondback Terrapin, became the official mascot for the University of Maryland in 1932 when Coach Harry "Curley" Byrd decided it was necessary to change our mascot from the "Old Liners." Since then, the Diamondback Terrapin has become the official reptile of Maryland due to its affiliation with the University.
Before this costume, Testudo Mascots made their own, because as the athletic department told one Mascot (Mark Tishler), there was no funding for an official costume.
This is apparent in both the logos of the past, as well as the homemade Testudo costumes, compared to the Testudo of today with his large beak and angry facial expression.
