Capital of Northern Morocco, Tetouan is situated in the midst of greenery.
A belt of orchards, planted with orange, almond, pomegranate and cypress trees, encompasses dazzlingly white houses that cling to the Dersa hillside.
The palace was built in the 1 7th century but was renovated and restored in 1948 in such a way that it retains its character and is an ideal example of Hispano-Mauresque architecture.

A descendent of the Spanish Moors who settled in Tetouan in the 15th Century, he has lived his entire life in Tetouan's Kasbah (or castle and immediate surrounding area), at the very heart of Tetouan's extensive medina, or old town.
On Sunday the 28th, we woke up early to cycle from Tangier to Tetouan, the capital city of the Rif Mountain region of Morocco.
In Tetouan, we bumped into a man from the local tourist information office, Ahmed Habri (see our Person of the Day), who turned out to be a great help showing us around.

As we were admiring the handmade goods we turned a corner and entered the Tetouan tannery.
This is until I, in the worst french ever spoken by a Canadian, found out that the bus from Tanger to Tetouan only costs 16Dh (Dirham), which is only just over one Euro.
I happily spent the 94Dh on seven tickets and the next thing we knew we were in the city of Tetouan.

First impressions were not great..our guide whisked us around the city at the speed of lightning, asked for a full days pay for TWO hours work, a tip and; a 'gift' from England - a pair of Glens ripped trousers, before again telling us to trust no one and then disappearing.
Despite some of the people, Tetouan is a pretty lovely place, with the most amazing views of the Rif Mountains and, it had a total of 47 Mosques, which at prayer, are ALL full up.
We left Tetouan a day earlier than planned, but all in all it was a good, eye opening experience to the realities of independent traveling.

Tetouan is not connected to the railway network.
The railway company ONCF does have buses running between Tangier and Tetouan to compliment their train services from Casablanca.
On the other side, you can take a taxi straight to Tetouan or travel by taxi to Fnidek and then catch a bus to Tetouan from there.

With the exception of the fresh figs in the middle of the picture, this vendor sells fruits and vegetables similar to what is found in Western supermarkets.
The food suuqs of Tetouan are in certain respects not real suuqs, as they don't occupy their own space: they follow the streets for hundreds of metres.
All types of fruits and vegetables can be bought here, as well as fresh fish (if you get here in the morning).

Tetouan suffers from not having any hotels of higher standards, and the best hotels there are, struggle hard to defend their two stars.
Buses will connect you to th train running south from Tangier.
Note that Tetouan is also no longer a "good" spot to pick up kif, as police control over guides has stopped the easy access to this drug as well.
