Ptolemy - Free Encyclopedia of Thelema
The Tetrabiblos is an extensive and continually reprinted treatise on the ancient priciples of astrology in four books (Greek tetra means "four", biblos is "book").
That it did not quite attain the unrivalled status of the Syntaxis was perhaps because it did not cover some popular areas of the subject, particularly horary astrology (interpreting astrological charts for a particular moment to determine the outcome of a course of action to be initiated at that time), electional astrology, and medical astrology.
The great popularity that the Tetrabiblos did possess might be attributed to its nature as an exposition of the art of astrology and as a compendium of astrological lore, rather than as a manual.

Ptolemy was concerned to defend astrology by defining its limits, compiling astrological data that he believed was reliable and dismissing practices (such as considering the numerological significance of names) that he believed to be without sound basis.

Tetrabiblos Ptolemy's four-volume treatise on astrology (second century).
As explained by Ptolemy in the Tetrabiblos, the Moon and the Sun were assigned to the Rulership of Cancer and Leo because "these are the most Northerly of all the Signs, and approach nearer than any others to the Zenith of this part of the Earth...

Tetrabiblos (literally, "four books") was long thought to be a complete survey of Greek astrology.
Recent research suggests this not to be the case, but Ptolemy’s work remains the foundation of western astrology.
Book 1 of Tetrabiblos defines various technical terms and supplies other information needed by the astrologer.

Though the Tetrabiblos is a marvel of clear organization and shows deep philosophical sophistication and subtlety, it is not clear whether Ptolemy himself was a practicing astrologer.
A commentary on Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos is attributed to him, which is not so much a line by line commentary as an attempt to explain the technical vocabulary Ptolemy uses; this work draws heavily on Antiochus.
He also seems to have been the first to write a commentary on Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos; Hephaistio (Bk II) cites this commentary frequently when discussing the issue of the house division to be used for the determination of length of life in Ptolemy's manner.

Every serious astrologer, from the 3rd century to the present, has studied the Tetrabiblos.
My book, The Star of Bethlehem: The Legacy of the Magi also made use of other astrological primary sources which showed that to understand the Magi's Star, we need to understand astrology as it practiced as Ptolemy described.

The Tetrabiblos offered a detailed explanation of the philosophical framework of astrology, enabling its practitioners to answer critics on scientific as well as religious grounds.
The Tetrabiblos has been referred to as 'the surrender of science' (1), an unfair statement since Ptolemy reveals no interest in magic, superstition or ideas which fall beyond the realm of reason.
Although he maintains the importance of the angles of a chart, the Tetrabiblos shows a noticeable lack of interest in the houses, whilst other elements of astrology were considered to be completely unworthy of mention, either because they were too unscientific, too reminiscent of fortune telling, or defied any kind of rational explanation:

 Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos: Preface
This Paraphrase of Proclus on the Tetrabiblos of Ptolemy was translated a few years ago by Leo Allatius, a Greek by birth, eminently skilled in the learning of his own nation, as well as in Latin literature, and already celebrated for other writings in both languages.
There were several prior translations of the original Tetrabiblos in Latin and Arabic; and it appears by an extract from the Bibliotheca Græca of Fabricius [which will be found in a subsequent page], that a Latin version, done from the Arabic, was printed at Venice as early as the year 1493.
There is abundant proof throughout the Tetrabiblos, that Ptolemy considered the virtues of the constellations of the zodiac distinctly from those of the spaces they occupied.

The Tetrabiblos examined conception and birth, saying that it was better to work with the conception date and that this date should be known by observation.
Finally, the forth book of the Tetrabiblos handled matters of occupation, marriage, children, travel, and "houses" of the zodiac.
There were other errors in his work, mostly dealing with beliefs of the time and misinformation about astronomy; however, for the most part, the Tetrabiblos has proved invaluable to this day.

This is really not such a leap of faith to make, for the elements are both physical matter and their qualities, inseparably, and thus action upon one aspect is action upon both.
So Aristotle gives Ptolemy a way for the planets to shape someone's personality aswell as their body, which he uses by saying that the Sun and Moon have effective qualities; heating and drying, and cooling and moistening respectively, with the qualities of other planets being given in the Tetrabiblos [25].
The influence of the other planets per se is not as readily apparent as that of the Sun and Moon, and is skilfully, and obliquely, argued [26]

And since weaker natures always yield to the stronger, and the particular always falls under the general,1 it would by all means be necessary for those who purpose an inquiry about a single individual long before to have comprehended the more general considerations.
Furthermore, many of the males are unsound and effeminate of soul, and some even hold in contempt the organs of generation, through the influence of the aspect of the maleficent planets in combination with Venus occidental.
We must, then, observe the sun at rising to determine the weather by day and at setting for the weather at night, and its aspects to the moon for weather conditions of longer extent, on the assumption that each aspect, in general, foretells the condition up to the next.

Around the 2nd century A. Ptolemy (pictured left), a Greek scientist, wrote a colossal work on astrology, which is divided into two parts: The Almagest and The Tetrabiblos.
The Almagest deals with the movement of the Sun, Moon, and planets; The Tetrabiblos with the interpretation of these movements as they affect man and human events.
These books are perhaps the most complete written records of ancient astronomy and astrology that have remained to us, and are a compilation of works from previous centuries.

It is therefore of considerable historical interest, as well as being essential to contemporary astrologers who wish to understand the origins of current astrological rules.
The former comprehensively describes the significance for human beings of various astronomical phenomena while the latter gives guidelines for such predictive matters as forecasting the length of life.
However, the very fact that his work was influential in medieval Europe is a corrective to the common idea that the astrology of the 12th - 15th centuries was heavily Ptolemaic, that is, concerned with physical affects and causes and antipathetic to horary astrology, which is omitted from the Tetrabiblos.

All authors have agreed that while other cultures have merely supplemented it, the main principles, ideology, and basic methods of astrology still originate in Mesopotamia, although its contribution to the doctrine that had developed by the end of antiquity has often been underestimated (Boll 1926: 1-2).
It was all for the sake of the astrological truth that he attempted to describe in Tetrabiblos.
Characteristically of this period the text does not include references, therefore it is impossible to distinguish between the summary of previous studies and the author's own contribution.
