Topic: Tetrahedrite

In the News (Tue 18 Jun 13)

  Fahlerz and Arsenic-bearing
Tetrahedrite group minerals are economically important, as copper ores and are the world's most important primary source of silver.
Tetrahedrite is often found as a replacement of earlier formed sulphides or sulphosalts, due to the reaction of minerals such as sphalerite and chalcopyrite with later As and Sb (Cu)-bearing hydrothermal fluids.
Tetrahedrite group minerals are ubiquitous in polymetallic veins and skarns formed by hydrothermal activity associated with high level intermediate or acid igneous rocks - especially in the meso- and epithermal deposits of the western Americas related to Andean (the Cordilleran Veins) and Laramide orogenesis.

Tetrahedrite, the silver-carrier in Central Wales
Tetrahedrite (L) forming distinctive, grey-brown triple-grain contact inclusions in recrystallised galena with chalcopyrite and a little white ullmannite.
The sample is from Cwmerfin mine, one of a notable group of mines between Darren and Goginan where very high silver yields (30 ounces/ton) in lead-ore were par for the course.
Tetrahedrite also occurs in hand specimens as 2-3cm aggregates and its presence must have been known about in the 17th century - these were silver mines back then.

XPS Characterization of Chalcopyrite, Tetrahedrite, and Tennantite Surface Products after Different Conditioning. 1. ...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
In the case of tetrahedrite and tennantite the outermost hydrophilic layer consists mainly of copper oxides/hydroxides and it is not well separated from the rest of the surface structure.
Tetrahedrite forms the copper oxides/hydroxides product much more quickly with a major amount of cupric species, whereas tennantite oxidation, under the same conditions, yields a small amount of cuprous surface species.
It should be noted that although tetrahedrite and tennantite contain a significant amount of other elements, they are not concentrated in the outermost layer.

The formation of Sb ores was followed by precipitation of dolomite and tetrahedrite and finally, by separate barite veins.
Later tetrahedrite ores with sulphides richer in Bi were formed presumably from fluids with similar PT conditions.
Tetrahedrite from several Sb veins is chemically close to tetrahedrite from Dubrava.

 TETRAHEDRITE (Copper Antimony Sulfide)
Tetrahedrite is named for its common crystal form, the tetrahedron.
Tetrahedrite is in an informal group of minerals called the "fahlerz" or "fahlores" group.
Often it will contain a certain percentage of silver and be used as a minor ore. The multi-faceted tetrahedral crystals as well as the flat faced simple tetrahedral crystals can be very striking and a real pleasure for mineral collectors to own.

Mining, Mineralization and Tax Evasion in the Channel Islands.
This assemblage is common in the islands and if the tetrahedrite is argentiferous (as in Jersey and Sark) then this specimen may well represent one of the silver-lead lodes.
The primary ore (collected from the tips on the north-eastern end of the lode) is composed of pyrite and quartz in a galena or, locally, chalcopyrite and tetrahedrite cement with subordinate amounts of marcasite and sphalerite.
Silver is present in the antimony sulphosalts, polybasite, pyrargyrite and tetrahedrite (up to 23 wt % Ag) and to a lesser extent as the arsenic sulphosalts, pearceite and tennantite (up to 20wt % Ag).

Microprobe analyses of tetrahedrite from the Trixie mine, East Tintic District, Utah, a base and precious metal vein deposit, are used to characterize the chemical variation of the mineral tetrahedrite, refine ore genesis models, and relate solid solution compositions to variations in the physico-chemical conditions attending mineralization.
This implies tetrahedrite composition is relatively insensitive to fO2 and pH when another solid solution mineral of similar composition is present because expansion of one stability field is restricted by expansion of the other stability field.
Despite these rapid compositional variations there is a strong association of Ag- and Sb-rich tetrahedrite with the gold ore identifying the zone of mixing and maximum extent of fluid evolution in the Trixie mine.

Crystal chemistry of tetrahedrite solid-solutions: EPR and magnetic investigations
Abstract: One hundred and thirty samples from the collection of the Natural History Museum in Florence, labeled as tetrahedrite, have been extensively studied by means of SEM, XRD, EPMA, DTA, EPR and SQUID techniques.
Wide-ranging substitutions, confirmed by compositional data, play a fundamental role in the thermal behavior, "stabilizing" natural tetrahedrite with respect to the synthetic equivalent.
The results of the study confirm the crystal-chemical formula of the tetrahedrite samples investigated.
