Tetrapanax papyriferum is found in warmer climates in subtropical regions of the world.
Tetrapanax papyriferum grows best in soils that are rich in organic material, but is capable of growing in clay or gravel soils as well.
The pollen from the flowers of the plant are said to aid hemorrhoids, the stem is said to act as a sedative in addition to being used for coughs and bronchitis.

Tetrapanax is in the Araliaceae, the ginseng family.
Tetrapanax 'paper' was cut by turning the pith against a blade; the way veneer is cut from a log.
Tetrapanax is very dramatic in the landscape; the leaves can grow to a meter (3 feet) across.

Tetrapanax papyriferus is not invasive in all zones.
It was briefly introduced to Hawaii but it became immediately apparent it was going to be a noxious weed, so all plants were destroyed and it is now prohibitted.
I am desperately seeking some Tetrapanax roots (rhizomes) if anyone has any extras or is thinning out their plants.

The leaves of my Tetrapanax survived several light frosts this fall (more so than other subtropicals, like elephant ears, cannas, and castor beans) but it looks like temperatures in the mid-20's last week have finally killed the leaves.
On the down side, this tetrapanax seems to be as rampant as running bamboo.
Several Tetrapanax's here lost their leaves but resprouted from the trunks and look great.

Every morning I drive by a nice 15' single trunked Tetrapanax.
This morning I noticed it has a few bloom spikes coming out the top of it.
I would have thought all the tetrapanax would have been cut to the ground last winter.

Here is a pic of my Tetrapanax papyrifer "rex".
Looks to be one in the same sold locally as Tetrapanax "Steriodal Giant".
Mine is 3 yrs old and took a year to take off but now has a 6' stem and the same deeply cut leaves unlike the typical Tetrapanax sold prior to this one being available.
