 Multiquarks: Theory
A previous model-independent variational approach considers a tetraquark with two heavy antiquarks and two light quarks as a heavy antidiquark with the color field of a quark bound to the two light quarks with a wave function like that of a heavy baryon.
Results indicate that a charmed-strange tetraquark $\bar c \bar s u d$ or a bottom-strange tetraquark $\bar b \bar s u d$ with this "diquark-heavy-baryion" wave function is not bound, in contrast to "molecular-type" $D-K$ and $B-K$ wave functions.
In this work we study tetraquark bound states in the framework of the constituent quark model of Ref. [2], which has been used for the description of non-strange two- and three-baryon systems and later on applied to the hadron spectra.

To illustrate this, consider the case of the tetraquarks, which contain two quarks and two antiquarks, qqq-barq-bar, in any of the light-quark flavours.
All the favourable tetraquarks are examples of what are called crypto-exotics, as opposed to manifest exotics.
Both the non-observation of manifestly exotic tetraquarks and the probable existence of crypto-exotic tetraquarks agree with diquark expectations.

We investigate the possibility of 4-body bound states of 2c +2c-bar.
We present a net binding analysis to determine if the resulting tetraquark states are stable against breakup into a pair of charmonium mesons.
Within the two models examined, we find indications for several close-lying states that will not decay into a pair of charmonium mesons.

A tetraquark is a subatomic particle composed of four quarks.
One of the most bizarre properties of quarks is that they can never exist individually.

In spite of such seemingly simple counting, the assignment of any given state as a glueball, tetraquark or hybrid remains tentative even today.
Even when there is agreement that one of several states is one of these non-quark model mesons, the degree of mixing, and the precise assignment is fraught with uncertainties.
They are clearly not glueballs, but could be either a tetraquark or a hybrid.

If it really exists, our analysis indicates that X(1600) is probably a tetraquark state with two quarks in the $\mathbf{\bar 3}_c$ representation.
The $0^{++}$ light mesons and the new $D$ states measured at different factories cannot be described as $q\bar q$ pairs and a tetraquark structure is suggested.
The existence of a shallow or virtual tetraquark state, $cc\bar{u}\bar{d}$, is discussed.

We use a set of Hamiltonians tuned to fit the charmonia spectroscopy and employ recently developed many-body methods that are free of spurious center-of-mass motion effects.

All the known strongly interacting particles have up to now been classified either as three quark, or as quark-antiquark combinations.
Other possible colour neutral stuctures, such as tetraquarks (two quarks and two antiquarks), pentaquarks (four quarks and one antiquark) or dibarions (six quarks) have therefore been named exotic particles.
This latest excitement in particle physics has been triggered by a personal contact between Russian theorist Dmitri Diakonov and Japanese experimentalist Takashi Nakano.

Quarks, diquarks and pentaquarks (June 2004) - Physics World - PhysicsWeb
When we examine protons closely by bombarding them with electrons, we find that they contain plenty of gluons and light quark-antiquark pairs.
And even if we ignore these quantum fluctuations, and accept the "rule of three" for quark–antiquark combinations, we must wonder: why are exotic body plans such as tetraquarks (qqq-barq-bar) or pentaquarks (qqqqq-bar) not found in the spectrum of hadrons?
Another well known and highly successful model, which predates even the quark model and whose success partly explains why quarks took so long to discover, is the traditional model of atomic nuclei.
