Teuchter is a Lowland Scots word used mainly for Northern or Highland Scots, although sometimes to any rural Scots, by urban Scots.
A teuchter is the hero of Bill Hill's The Portree Kid [1], which parodies the song Ghost Riders in the Sky as "The teuchter that cam frae Skye".
The word teuchter is the origin of part of the scientific name for a species of salmon, Gyrodactylus teuchis (G. Teuchis, for short).

For those readers unfamiliar with the niceties of Scottish dialect, the word "teuchter" (pronounced chookter) refers somewhat disparagingly to inhabitants of the north of my country.
Although my dress and hobbies are considerably less spectacular, the description "teuchter in Washington" -- roughly translated as: "Naïve northern Scottish person arrives in American capital speaking with slightly indecipherable accent" -- is a fairly apt description of my experience in your city.
I can honestly say, and perhaps this is the "teuchter" speaking, that I experienced nothing that could back this up.

A teuchter, however, is the name given to people from the Western Isles (Lewis, Skye etc.).
It may be more localised than the whole of the Western Isles, I'm nae sure, but that's where it originates, and that's what it refers to.
Teuchter, though, is also a label given (incorrectly) to us broad spoken country folk of the north-east by bliddy toonsers and the white-settlers (nae offence to the toonsers and settlers!!).

Lately, however, I have been irritated, moving on to being downright scunnered, by his persistent use of the term “teuchter” whenever some aspect of Highland life swims into his fastidious Central Belt gaze.
His uneasiness with things Highland was further made obvious when he quoted the Gaelic title of Aonghas Padraig Caimbeul’s work (Diary, August 21) and added the dismissive, “don’t ask”.
For Mr Taylor’s information, were he to confront me and refer to me as “teuchter” he would run the risk of, at least, a sharp rejoinder, at worst a good slap.
