Topic: Teuthologist

  The Big Calamari
A teuthologist (squid expert) explains all there is to know about the elusive sea monster.
Architeuthis, which can grow to a maximum (known) length of 60 feet, is one of the largest animals on earth, but we know next to nothing about it -- not its hunting and breeding habits, or its life-span, or even its geographical distribution.
In 1997, an expedition led by the Smithsonian Institution teuthologist (or squid specialist) Clyde Roper and filmed by National Geographic sought to photograph the giant squid in the waters off New Zealand.

Grimaldi Scaled Squid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Grimaldi Scaled Squid is a squid named after the Grimaldi family, reigning house of Monaco.
Prince Albert I of Monaco was an amateur teuthologist who pioneered the study of deep sea squids by collecting the 'precious regurgitations' of Sperm Whales.
Grimaldi Scaled Squid was first collected from the stomach contents of a whale.

Vampire Squid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Unique retractile sensory filaments justify the Vampire Squid's placement in its own order: Vampyromorphida (formerly Vampyromorpha), sharing similarities with both squid and octopuses.
As a phylogenetic relic it is the only surviving member of its order, first described and mistakenly identified as an octopus in 1903 by German teuthologist Carl Chun.
At a maximum 30 cm (1 foot) in total length, the Vampire Squid is no threat to humans.

 The Virtual Museum.
When a scientist describes and gives a scientific name to a plant or animal for the first time, the actual specimen that he was working from is known as the 'type' and is deposited in a museum such as the BMNN.
For example, the vampire squid, Vampyroteuthis infernalis was first described in 1903 by Carl Chun, a German teuthologist.
The type specimen was taken on the Valdivia expedition in the Atlantic Ocean, and was illustrated by the expedition's artist, a fellow named Rübsamen.

Re: Fossil Discovery Threatens Theory of Birds' Evolution
This would be true if the convergence was as superficial, or involved as few characters, as that between the shell of Spirula and that of ammonites; as I mentioned earlier there are striking differences between the two.
No modern teuthologist would mistake Spirula for an ammonite.
However, what you are talking about with theropods would amount to massive convergence across a whole range of skeletal characters - so extreme, in fact, that no modern palaeontologist, including experts studying these animals in particular, has recognized it if it exists.

In more recent times, the use of newer plastics such as polyurethane foam have permitted the arms of the giant squid to be positioned in more fluid poses.
Teuthologist Clyde Roper, one of the world’s foremost authorities on the giant squid and Matthew Palmer, acclaimed wildlife artist are collaborating to create a model of the giant squid that combines the best scientific information available today with an artist’s vision of the mystery and magnificence of the creature.
Research efforts are underway to enter the domain of the giant squid.

One of this squid's claims to fame is that, in proportion to size, it has the largest eyes of any animal.
In 1903, a German teuthologist (squid specialist) by the name of Carl Chun, thought he had identified the specimen as an octopus, because he originally thought it had eight arms, but later, another pair of thin arms were discovered.
This fl or dark flish-brown "fangtooth," otherwise known as "ogrefish," can be found worldwide in temperate and warm waters including, but not limited to, the western Atlantic Ocean, eastern Atlantic Ocean, and parts of the western Pacific and eastern Pacific Oceans.

As an example of the mysterious nature of the deep-water cephalopods, consider Vampyroteuthis infernalis, whose name can be translated as "vampire squid from Hell." About a foot long, this deepwater denizen is among the most fascinating animals on earth.
It was first described in 1903 by Carl Chun, a German teuthologist who identified it as an octopus, because it had -- he thought -- eight arms.
Then another pair of thin arms was discovered, tucked into pockets outside the web that connects the eight arms.

I'd love to have a teuthologist installed in my home, but I'm afraid it might clash with the poet I had installed last year.
As you know, poets are both clean and warm and most are far above the norm (whether here or on the roam, have a poet in every home).
I'll arrange for shipping the teuthologist and his feline minions, in exchange for a guarantee that the teuthologist will not play recordings (or sing accapella renditions) of "Song Sung Blue." I've painful associations of that song with an ex-girlfriend.

Scientists found sperm deposits under her mantle—where sperm is stored before fertilizing the eggs.
But, cautioned Clyde Roper, a teuthologist (squid specialist) at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C., studies of other squid have revealed that sperm packets or "spermatophores" can remain viable for weeks and sometimes months after mating.
So there is no guarantee that the meeting of the sexes took place nearby, or even recently.

The keynote speech for the first day was a tribute to Kir Nesis’ achievements as a scientist and teuthologist, by colleagues both from his home country of Russia and around the world.
I found that during the lunch breaks and the two dinners, I was able to get quite a bit of insight from talking to the various teuthologists present.

First described in 1903, the deepwater vampire squid Vampyroteuthis infernalis defied proper classification for more than twenty five years.
German teuthologist Carl Chun originally believed these stange cephalopods with their fl bodies and 8 crimson-tipped arms to be a type of octopus.
Later, another worker felt that Chun’s placement of this species into an existing group of octopods was incorrect, and instead a new family level group (Vampyroteuthidae) was warranted to include a sole member, V. infernalis.
