Thrash metal is a subgenre of heavy metal music, one of the extreme metal subgenres, that is characterised by its high speed and aggression.
Thrash guitar solos are almost exclusively played at high speed, as they are usually characterised by shredding, and use techniques such as sweep picking, legato phrasing, alternate picking, string skipping, and two-hand tapping.
Recently thrash (along with many genres of extreme metal previously considered dead by the mainstream media, but well alive to the underground metal scene) has seen a certain degree of resurgence of popularity, including (but not limited to) the younger audience of Generation Y (many of which have embraced the genre greatly).

The origins of thrash metal are generally traced to the late 1970s and early 1980s, when a number of heavy metal bands began incorporating speed metal's extreme speed into traditional metal melody and riffs.
Thrash metal took off in 1984 or so, with Overkill releasing their second demo (Feel the Fire), and Slayer's seminal Haunting the Chapel EP, which featured the song 'Chemical Warfare'.
Thrash metal developed in the mid 1980s to split into many subgenres and influence a lot of bands like Death and Possessed.

Their We_Are_The_Dead took a more Black_Sabbath oriented direction, resulting in a thrash metal form that was not quite as fast as that of Metallica but had similar riff ideas.
Thrash metal has seen something of a comeback in the late 1990s with European bands like Hypnosia (sounding much like Pleasure to Kill) or Carnal_Forge, a fast death-thrash hybrid.

The other side of thrash which was equally as important in the '80s came from Germany, otherwise known as Teutonic Thrash.
All three bands have something in common with the term "comeback", they were all at one point playing thrash metal and had gradually abandoned their style only to return to their roots eventually.

They have many similarities with old Slayer, which is thrash, maybe back then it could be considered death metal since it was the heaviest thing at the time, but now with bands like Krisiun, Cattle Decapitation, Vader, Cannibal Corpse and others, it would be alot weaker.
Death metal at that time was born from punk/hardcore and extreme thrash metal, and developed alongside grindcore.

To Alastor, thrash metal is far from a bygone artifact of a primitive age, it is a relevant and timeless sound that single-handedly encapsulates the nude aggression, raw energy and bestiality that made all of us fall in love with heavy fucking metal in the first place.
The most immediate reference points would be Teutonic thrash, the inclination towards hordes like Darkness, Poison and ESPECIALLY Destruction forming the crux of Alastor's stunningly catchy, yet never linear sound.

Hobbs' Angel Of Death emerged from Australia, playing a brand of thrash metal drawing heavily on early Slayer, yet geared towards the European market.

Additionally, Germany was feeding the general enthusiasm with what was one of the most important thrash metal scenes apart from the one in the San Francisco Bay Area, placing acts such as Destruction, Kreator, Tankard, and Sodom in the movement and injecting it with what at one time was labeled Teutonic thrash.
Even then, however, thrash metal was still far from achieving the success it deserved and strived for.
