NACOGDOCHES, Texas-- The 1st Congressional District race is one of the most hotly contested of the political season, and incumbent Max Sandlin, D-Marshall, has squared off with his Republican challenger, Louie Gohmert, a former state district judge from Tyler, in several public forums and debates.
Gohmert, who now has a private law practice, served three terms as a state district judge in Smith County and was later appointed by Gov. Rick Perry to serve an unexpired term as the chief justice for the 12th Court of Appeals.
Gohmert: Having traveled around this great East Texas district for the past year, I have talked to thousands of people around the district, and listened to their concerns and believe I have a good feel for the issues that affect them most.
