Texas (TV series) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Texas (sometimes called Another World in Texas and, later, Texas: The New Generation) was a soap opera which aired on NBC from August 4, 1980 until December 31, 1982.
It was unique in that it was the first soap opera to air hour-long episodes from its inception.
The last episodes featured a Christmas miracle (snow fell in Houston as Long's character Ashley and her unborn baby, who had been presumed dead after a flash flood, returned home to loving husband Justin) and a New Year's series finale where the local TV station was bought out and all the major characters were fired.

In 1980 Bert said that the reason he was drawn to Texas was, "The big lure Texas has is the fact that NBC is pulling out all the stops to make it the most lavish soap opera ever done.

Brazilian soap opera 'America' is their story   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Titled "America," a Brazilian soap opera produced by Rede O Globo, Brazil's largest broadcaster, tells the saga of Sol, a young Brazilian woman who, after failing to obtain a U.S. tourist visa, crosses the U.S.-Mexican border to live in the land of her dreams as an illegal immigrant.
The soap opera, or novela in Portuguese, strikes a chord with the Brazilian community in the region, where the episodes are closely followed and have become one of the main topics of conversation in churches, hair salons and other places where Brazilians socialize.
For them, none of whom wanted to be identified with their full names for fear of immigration authorities, the soap opera shows, with some accuracy, the risks of crossing the border and the difficulties of living in the shadows as an illegal immigrant.

But the scandal is also one rooted in the behavior of military reservists working at the prison, an environment that testimony has portrayed as more frat house than military prison, a place where inmates were routinely left naked and soldiers took pictures of one another simulating sex with fruit.
The reservists' treatment of Iraqi prisoners and their entanglements with one another - pieced together from documents, court testimony, e-mail and interviews - have produced a dark soap opera, one whose episodes have continued to play out in the months since the scandal erupted, and culminated in the Texas courtroom last week.
This is a indeed a soap opera; but it most certainly is not a evil plot devised by the Bushies to defame Islam and humiliate war prisoners.

AW was the first in many aspects as well: it was the first soap opera to talk about abortion in 1964 when such subjects were taboo.
It was the first soap to launch two spinoffs (Somerset and Texas) as well as an indirect one (Lovers and Friends, which would be re-named For Richer For Poorer) AW was rare in this regard, as very few American soap operas told stories about characters, as opposed to characters placed in awkward and preposterous situations.
