  Texas Cavalry Service Medal
Note: this is a Federal commemorative medal; it is not a medal produced under the authority of the State of Texas.
It was awarded for military service in one of the two brigades of cavalry organized by the State of Texas under authority of the War Department between December 8, 1917, and November 11, 1918 (members of these units were not eligible for the World War I Victory Medal).
The ribbon to the Texas Cavalry Service Medal consists of a field of yellow bisected by a white pinstripe edged in green.

After rendering invaluable service to the battalion commander in stemming the retreat, reorganizing the troops and extending the reverse position to the left, Maj. Bailey, despite a severe head wound, repeatedly led his troops in fierce hand-to-hand combat for a period of 10 hours.
Citation: For extraordinary heroism, distinguished service, and conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty as commander of Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 3, in Philippine waters during the period 7 December 1941 to 10 April 1942.
His zealous fighting spirit undiminished despite terrific casualties and the loss of most of his key officers, he again reorganized his troops for renewed attack against the enemy's main line of resistance and was directing the fire of the rocket platoon when he fell, critically wounded.

Since cavalry was needed badly on the turbulent Texas frontier, the Ninth was organized in great haste at Greenville, Louisiana.
Early in the spring of 1867 the regiment was ordered to Texas, although few officers had reported for duty and the enlisted men had not been properly trained and disciplined.
In cooperation with several infantry units, the cavalry was responsible for protecting and defending a vast region of West Texas, as well as hundreds of miles of Rio Grande frontier.

He was assigned to Company D of the Tenth U.S. Cavalry and was discharged on May 18, 1872 at Ft. Sill, Indian Territory * as a private.
When discharged at Fort Concho, Texas on June 6, 1877, Henry Parker was a sergeant, a member of the "Color Guard" with his character listed as "Excellent".
It also recognized the military merits of fl soldiers by authorizing two segregated regiments of fl cavalry, the Ninth United States Cavalry and the Tenth United States Cavalry and the 24th, 25th, 38th, 39th, 40th and 41st Infantry Regiments.
