In the county the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 24.90% from 25 to 44, 25.30% from 45 to 64, and 17.80% who are 65 years of age or older.

Some 48,000 acres in the north and northwest part of the county is now part of the Mark Twain National Forest, along with several acres in the southeast part of the county being part of the Ozark National Scenic Riverways Park.
The 1990 Federal Census of Texas County was 21,476 citizens.
