John Horton Slaughter was born in Sabine Parrish, Louisiana to Ben and Minerva Slaughter on October 2, 1841.  When he was 3 months old, the family moved to Caldwell County, TX.  At the age of 14 he and the family moved to the vicinity of San Antonio, TX, living in Frio and Atascosa Counties.
During the Civil War, John joined the Confederate Army on March 29, 1862.  Shortly after joining he was invalided out of the service because of tuberculosis.  Evidently, he did not consider his illness serious as he enlisted in the Texas Rangers fulltime fighting Comanche’s and outlaws.
"Texas" John Slaughter was not a particularly impressive man in appearance.  He was only 5'6" tall with a thick neck and broad shoulders.  His hair and moustache were gray.  Those who knew him always mentioned his penetrating dark eyes when describing him.
