Texas and Pacific Railway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Texas and Pacific Railway Company (known as the TandP) was created by federal charter in 1871 with the purpose of building a southern transcontinental railroad between Marshall, Texas and San Diego, California.
Missouri Pacific gained majority ownership of the Texas and Pacific Railway's stock in 1928 but allowed it to continue operation as a separate entity until they were eventually merged on October 15, 1976.
The Texas and Pacific was unable to finance construction to San Diego, California, and as a result the Southern Pacific was able to build from California to Sierra Blanca, Texas.

The Splinters - Volume 14 THE TEXAS AND PACIFIC
In 1869 a bill to incorporate and aid in the construction of the Texas Pacific was introduced in the Senate, and during 1870-71 session a similar bill became law.
By this act of March 3, 1871, the Texas Pacific was chartered to construct a railway from Marshall on the eastern boundary of Texas, via El Paso, to San Diego, following as nearly as might be expected the route of the thirty-second parallel.
Some of the bills proposed that the Southern Pacific should be recognized as the company to construct the road west of El Paso, and to receive a proportionate share of the lands granted to the Texas and Pacific.

Reaching the zenith of its power in the mid-1880s, the union sought to repeat in Texas the success it had enjoyed elsewhere, but it found this goal elusive in right -to-work Texas where well-connected companies like TP could summon steely-eyed Texas Rangers to keep the peace while scabs were imported to work the idle mines.
TP remained non-union until the United Mine Workers (UMW) came to Texas in 1903 and infiltrated union organizers into the ranks of the TP mineworkers.

This town has built up largely since the completion of the Texas and Pacific railroad, on which it is situated, about ten miles west of Bonham.
Its trade, from the country south, like Bonham's, was impaired by the building of the Missouri Pacific, which crosses Texas Pacific four miles west, at a town called Bells in Grayson County, running a southeast direction through a fertile and thickly populated portion of the county.
